Wrong again. DC area lower class is up to 150k, middle class is 150k to about 500k. Upper middle is 500k - 2MM.

Wow, you really are disconnected from the real world.

New poster, but there was a national graphic along thsee lines that adjusted class by COL based on thr area. DC metro Area was very sku'd due to the coat of housing and general COL. Those numbers are not way off. Wish I could find that graphic.

This. These numbers are pretty spot on, but I'd almost say a little low. These are probably good numbers for singles, but not dual income families. Double them for dual income.

You're saying the income of a middle-class family in this area is 300k to 1 million, and a family making less than 300k is lower-class???

What kind of skewed idea of middle-class lifestyle do you have?

FWIW, we, a four-person family, have an income around 250k, live just outside the District, and I totally consider us to be well-off. Not filthy rich, but very comfortable.

Only 85% of Americans graduate high school and 30% graduate college

Is this really true?

The COL of your little neck of the woods has little to do with median income of an entire region. You do realize the DC metro Area is made up of all sorts of walk of life, all sorts of little neighborhoods, and all sorts of COL differences. Who do you think is doing all the low pay low skill service and labor jobs in the DC area?

Are you paying your nanny 150K? Is the cashier at your local grocery store making 150k? Is guy picking up your garbage each week making 150k? Is the housekeeper working at the local hotel making 150k? Is the janitor cleaning your toilets at work making 150K? Is the personal care taker working in the local nursing home making 150k? Is the bugger flipper at your local fast food joint making 150K? .....

Yes, your completely and totally disconnected from what's going on around you.

The point your seemingly making is that your "neighborhood" is expensive. My point is your "neighborhood" is not the entirety of DC area. If you think it is, then you're disconnected from reality.

Exactly. Someone making $300K+ doesn't suddenly become "middle class" because they moved to an expensive neighborhood where everyone is making $300K+. The median HH income for the entire DC Metro Area (based on the US Census definition) is about $90K, higher than the US average so broadly speaking, the "middle class" range is higher for the metro area but not as high as the delusional PPs think it is.

HAH! Could you imagine if 300k was middle class? She must believe 99.99% of the country is destitute.

Furthermore I think some consideration needs to be given to the necessity of two earners working to support a household and the general high instability of employment in years past. The cost to a family for requiring two incomes is now than just the services hired out (childcare, cleaning, food prep).

I thought the above poster was being sarcastic.

I worked in the developing world and many of the towns had only a small layer of MC squeeze between a large underclass and a tiny elite. Kinda like a Pims biscuit. Or West Baltimore.

Thanks Obama - you're making the poor poorer - good job on keeping voters dependent on other taxpayers.

I agree. $125k HHI is very middle class I don't care where you live. If both parents went to college, they'd break $125k in their 20s in most fields. And a bachelor's don't NOT equate to upper class. Sorry.

Below $100 HHI is lower middle class.
