your best Thanksgiving "side" aka food that is not the turkey

Cranberry pomegranate sauce

Mashed potatoes and gravy - my grandfather's way of making gravy with cornstarch, not flour. I swear I would live on mashed potatoes if it was possible.

I also like green bean casserole - both the "junky" way and the less "junky" way of making it.

I love mashed potatoes best but it's not like they're anything special/different.

I like my chipotle sweet potatoes, Cape Cod chopped salad, and pumpkin gingerbread trifle (not a side, but still).

CORN PUDDING

2 15 3/4oz cans cream style corn, NOT drained
1 box Jiffy Cornbread mix
2 eggs (you could use egg beaters)
2/3 C milk (use skim/no fat)
1/2 C cooking oil
1 dash garlic salt (optional)

Mix together and pour in to a greased 9X12 baking pan and bake at 350 for 45 minutes (my note: it can take an hour).

My kids love it and it takes all of 3 minutes to throw together.

I use a similar recipe but given how much liquid is in yours I think yours truly may be more "pudding"y and mine is a bit more spongy/solid:

1 can drained corn
1 can creamed corn
1 box Jiffy mix
8 oz sour cream
1 stick melted butter

Mix and bake.

I also prefer the recipe that omits the eggs. The custardy taste detracts from the creaminess of the corn casserole.

You basically mix flour and sugar and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar and 2 cans of drained pineapple. Toss it all together them top with tons of crushed Ritz crackers you've lightly wetted with melted butter and some of the pineapple juice and bake. Soooooo good.

Thanks so much for their soup recipe recommendation! I just went to their site and printed it.

Yes! I have had this every Thanksgiving since I was a little girl. It is simple and delicious. It is best if made a day in advance.

Same here, though we tweak the recipe slightly to add one granny smith apple in addition to the orange and only a half cup of sugar. This plus the cooked cranberry sauce I make (with red wine, mulling spices, and crystalized ginger) are my favorite sides. Though I do love the stuffing too. And the mashed potatoes and gravy. All of it really.

Do you eat this as a standalone, or is it a topping for other dishes, like mashed potatoes or turkey (ie, is or more like a gravy)? It sounds delicious!

How do you make this alongside the turkey? Do you cook one in advance or have more than one oven? I just have one, and it's always hard to do other baked dishes.

Cornbread dressing. I love that stuff.

Recipe, please!!

The raw cranberry sauce doesn't do it for me. Anyone have a good recipe for cooked cranberry sauce?

Mashed Potatoes made from my Grandma's recipe. It has milk, butter, sour cream and cream cheese in it.

Two bags of cranberries, washed and picked through. One and a half cups of brown sugar. Large teaspoon of cinnamon. Two cups of orange juice. A clove and maybe an anise star if in the mood. Boil until cranberry sauce-y.

I made this up when I got kind of bored with the recipe on the bag, it is good.

The Ocean Spray recipe on the bag is good, but I kick it up a notch by substituting orange juice for half the water and adding the grated rind of one orange. Delicious and refreshing. BTW, I used to love to go to the Ocean Spray Cranberry World in Plymouth (near Plymouth Rock) when I was growing up. Lots of exhibits and a fun gift shop. Unfortunately, they closed it a number of years ago.
