154 of them by my count- http://commweb.fcps.edu/newsreleases/newsrelease.cfm?newsid=2839

and 2 of those are actually Arlington students- http://www.apsva.us/site/Default.aspx?PageID=31571
Keep in mind that TJ pulls from all over NOVA, not just FCPS.

Why would you count when it says in the text of the release that 163 TJ students were semifinalists?

About 80% of TJ students come from FCPS middle schools. That would suggest, in turn, that roughly 130 of the semifinalists are from Fairfax and that 33 are from other jurisdictions. If that is the case, I'd expect people in Arlington to be asking themselves why only two were from Arlington. That seems like a very small number, whether you compare it to the total number of TJ semifinalists or to an estimate of the number of semifinalists from outside Fairfax.

Given that the schools in both areas are quite excellent, it might be wise to focus on making a good long-term financial decision for your family.

Apples to apples comparisons are similar. Look a the home values in McLean near the North Arlington boarder and the houses in North Arlington near the McLean border and they have all held their values. The Arlington ones have always be more expensive.

I don't want to get into a catfight, but I live in a McLean neighborhood not too far from Arlington where virtually every new house now is $2.3 million or more. The newer builds in Arlington seem to be less expensive.

Depends where. CC Hills new builds (close to your neighborhood, I'm assuming) are $2.4M range. Other areas are less. Clarendon new builds are also pricier.

I just provided a factual analysis, one that I'm quite sure Murphy had APS staffers undertake as well.

We are debating between the two (Falls Church is a posibility but lower inventory) we are leaning toward Fairfax over Arlington because it seems there are better offerings but we just aren't sure.

I smell troll.

How many are Fairfax County residents, coming from private schools?

There's no right answer here.

N Arlington has held value better, but my house is worth almost $900k now and I have to share a bathroom with my kid.

2016 National Merit Semifinalists in APS high schools: 8

Means nothing to me, since my kid wouldn't be among them in either district. So, depending on your underlying model...

-- just being in the vicinity of the 237 is good for my kid
-- one district is clearly spending more on a set of kids at the expense of another set of kids
-- one district has smarter families moving in
-- one district has more value added

this is either a good thing or a bad thing. So, this stat is not useful.

It's quite obvious that, regardless of your feigned indifference, Fairfax attracts a larger proportion of the state's highest-achieving students than Arlington. That's simply a matter of fact.

Hey, uh, guys? This thread started off pretty great with "they are both terrific places to raise a family" blah blah blah. We have reached that point though where everyone participating is starting to sound a bit high strung and assy. I suggest that we try to return to the earlier Kumbaya vibe before we scare the poor OP out of NOVA altogether and over to Chevy Chase or Bethesda -- the horror!

Well, that would help with overcrowding.

Someone simply posted recentl statistics about one metric where FCPS does better than APS. You are right that the reaction was high strung, as the graceful response would have been to acknowledge or ignore it, not claim it "means nothing."

OP, are you still there?

Let's talk about the enormous snakes that travel though northern Virginia sewers, emerging from the toilets to half-swallow you while you sleep!

OP has a right to know.
