Is it normal that a child doesn't read aloud at school?

I felt bad for them and bad for me. I'd get bored at the slow pace, read ahead and then have no idea where to read from when it came my turn to read - much laughing and embarrassment ensued since it looked like I wasn't paying attention. Terrible practice for those behind and ahead. Reading one-on-one to a teacher or aid sounds like a great idea.
