I don't know why anyone in a stable family would want KIPP. They are known for their military like structure, long days, saturday school days. This is great for kids in shitty homes who don't get any support, they are better off spending less time at home. For educated parents, high SES families, KIPP methods are not necessary or wanted. We already provide enforcement and structure and expectations for our kids. |
| The question was are there Middle Schools in Ward 6. The answer is yes, but most families (white I presume) don't consider it an option. |
I wasn't aware that MDS was closing its doors. When did this come about? |
| My aunt is a parishioner at St Ann's and says they're nearly on the verge of bankruptcy. They're closing the school there if it's not closed already. Is this a move for St Ann's to improve finances? |
Wish Latin would expand and not let current parents or administration simply say "not at this time." How much longer do our kids have to wait? |
Latin parent here. I have no idea if the administration has been considering a satellite MS, but in fact Latin's retention rate from MS to HS has been going UP every year. I was told (was asking on behalf of friends; our child is in MS) that only five new ninth-graders were admitted to the HS. So this PP is simply factually wrong. |
Since Latin's founding, there have been Ward 3 kids there who are zoned for Deal. Some stay at Latin for high school, others go to Walls or go private and a few have opted to return to DCPS for Wilson. |
Yes, but the other public middle school "for" Ward 3 is Hardy. Problem is, "hardy" anyone in Ward 3 wants Hardy as they view it as substandard to Deal. |
Hardy may be better than most DC middle school options, but most folks in Ward 3 view it as rather inferior, esp. in comparison to Deal. Its a matter of what sort of educational experience people want and expect. |
Actually, Janney continues to fill the school to capacity with in-bounds students, despite several expansions. There is basically no room for more than a few OOB students, whether so-called 'at risk' or otherwise. |
IB for Deal doesn't mean Ward 3. |
isn't Janney less diverse than schools in Bethesda? |
The majority of kids who go to school in ward 3 don't live in ward 3. Ward 3 educates the rest of the city, because that's where people want to send their kids to be educated. Why not give the people what they want? |
Exactly. And what people want is another high quality middle school in Ward 3. Hardy isn't it. |
| The majority of kids who girl school in ward 3 don't live in ward 3?! I that true? |
