Washington Latin did a major renovation, has fields, space that is tailored for students who are in Middle and High School.

Latin has been quietly investigating a satellite middle school campus. They are finding their retention rate from middle to high is not enough to fill the high school. They need more middle schoolers because they don't really accept new students for high school..

Interesting. Schools can't just scale up and maintain quality. It can be risky.

Not a Latin parent here.

From what I understand Latin is doing middle school very well and is significantly oversubscribed. Why would you want to preclude it from expanding what is working to serve the vast middle school gap in DC?

They don't need another MS charter in ward 3. They need one in ward 6!

Yes, yes, yes!!

Months and months ago the city looked at St. Ann's for a swing space during construction. They were clear it was unavailable for any school (had been approached by other charters too) since the Archdiosces and Cathilic Charities were keeping it.

No what they need is a good middle school option for WARD 7 they are shutting down schools but are not doing anything with them Ronald Brown is a school that has been shut down for years they need to do something with that building. To me at least ward 6 has excellent elementary school options and good middle schools ward 7 elementary schools are terrible and the middle school option sucks along with the high school option. You other wards are so selfish!

Sorry - this was in response to the poster stating there was nothing in Ward 6. I believe that both are in Ward 6. The only public middle school in Ward 3 is Deal.

basis is in ward 2. 2R is in ward 6. So are 2 Center City middle schools, a KIPP, a Friendship, Washington Global (new this year), and Options. There are 4 Tier 1 charter middle schools in Ward 6.

You mean they need more middle schoolers from Ward 3 to fill the high school with high achievers?

This was my thoughts too when I read that post. Who's to say that the MS students in the satellite campus will move onto HS there? They may be facing the same problem, especially on the commute aspect.

For us, we might try out Latin for MS, but still attend Wilson. No need in going across town.

HA, DCUM-ers don't want KIPP or Friendship even if they are Tier 1. So funny.

^Ever visited a KIPP open house as a white parent? Do it and hear admins and teachers tell you that KIPP's mission is to serve children of color, period. Most of Cap Hill residents are white these days but you want us to seriously consider KIPP schools because they're Tier 1? Hello, KIPP doesn't want us.

Your proposed site is actually closer to the Md. line than the not-even-available (!) and just as far north from the White House / Constitution / the geographic city center as St. Ann's.

Sometimes I wonder if all the ward 3 haters have ever set foot out of their own neighborhood?

The only middle schoolers who live in Ward 3 and attend Latin are the kids from Glover Park (IB = Hardy, not Deal). The rest of Ward 3 goes to Deal, which is what makes Deal as strong as it is. Critical mass and all

We are at Latin (son going into 6th). I can think if 5 kids in the 6th grade who are IB for Deal who chose Latin (and I expect there are others). The parents said they would have been fine with Deal, but Latin seemed to be a better fit for their kid.
