Bethune opening second campus

Is the Brookland building up for grabs?)

It doesn't sound like it. The charter board paperwork says the school started out in the CH building, and they are well below their enrollment ceiling, so it's not technically an "expansion." The only thing I can think of is that their enrollment is declining, and they are trying to tap into the Latino population in CH. the school has a very minimal Latino enrollment. It's really hard to fathom an immersion school in DC that only has 66 kids on the wait list.

Shouldn't they only expand tier 1 charters?

As someone noted in a previous post this is not actually an expansion - they are allowed under their current charter to enroll up to 500 students. This is just a change to their campus.

That was a very 'smart' way to write the charter. If they have declining enrollment , but are approved to 'open' a 2nd campus to buttress that enrollment. Seems like the strategy to save/protect struggling charters is to allow them to enroll additional PreK3s. Isn't that what Sela was allowed to do? Interesting.

Quick idiot check: is that type of expansion really innovating to create something better for DC? Or just more $$ for daycare for MD kids at a mediocre school?

Charter supporters should be pissed because things like that make the whole system look like a money grab rather than true educational innovation.

Stop blaming MD residents on the school itself. There is an audit that is done which hopefully weeds out the bad guys.

MD is not as close to the 16th street campus as the Brookland campus.

No, the new campus is just for Prek to K. They will remain in the Brookland campus.

How so? The Church isn't large enough for all of the elementary grades. Maybe they can transition to an Apple Tree model.

If they do move/close there will be a lot of interest in that building.

A. LOT. This would actually be a great opportunity in a neighborhood pining for better options than Bethune.

I believe it's already promised elsewhere.

Huh? The Brookland campus is promised elsewhere? What makes you say that? There's no indication of it going anywhere as far as I'm aware. I received the letter mentioning the second campus and it is very clear that I have the option to enroll my student at either.

Huh, I thought Bethune would be expanding much closer to the current location.

Will they take a late birthday for pk4?

Bethune campus promised? We heard another thread talk about another being promised a facility for 16-17 in Ward 5? Is Bethune he property?

Are you referring to Lee? They plan on staying in the neighborhood, but it's no way to guess which property. There are several mediocre Charters in that neighborhood.

Yes, wondered if it was Lee? So who is being promised?
