Anyone been to San Francisco lately? The "traveler" population is out of control.

Thats just it. So aggressive and spread out all over the city and all through the parks. There are an overwhelming amount of them in a relatively small area.

But, how can this be happening? I thought CA and, of course, SF were liberal Utopias? Why would law and order be required?

What do you see in your future? (Long pause) Ummm...(awkward grin)..."A hot dog, definitely a hot dog."

It's not like DC doesn't have its own issues. Large homeless populations in parks just blocks from the WH. So very sad. America in a nutshell, I guess.

I worked in NY before Gulianni cleaned it up. Where do you think all the homeless went? It was not as if all of a sudden there were programs and services and they had a place in NY to go to.

A former Tenderloin resident gives his insider's take on the situation (humorous and sobering):

Don't give cash to the homeless. I spend a lot of time and money working with homeless charities. If I'm asked for cash by a homeless person, or a person pretending to be homeless on the street, I say "Sorry, I don't have any cash."

Hasn't anyone else here read about affluent beggars? Hell, one of them posted here a few years ago explaining why they do it.

We have the whole gutter punk culture here in Austin too, but in the summer it is too hot to live on the streets without dying of heatstroke, so most of them travel to San Francisco or Seattle where the climate is milder in the summer. With cities like Chicago or NYC you won't see them in the winters for the same reason. Dan Savage describes it as "slow motion suicide" in one of his books--the birth mother of his son lived that lifestyle and wanted an open adoption, so they navigated some tricky issues relating to explaining homelessness to a young child,

This is not from a displaced homeless population. Thus is an entire culture of young people that for the most part have no reason to be homeless except by choice.
