Before anyone accuses PP of being an anti-vaxer, the chicken pox vaccine hasn't been around forever. My oldest child, age 23, had CP b/c the vaccine didn't exist then. My 20 year old son got the vax. His peds was one of the big researchers in developing the vaccine https://videos.med.wisc.edu/presenters/4056 |
| I should add that when my sis had it in her thirties she had about 18 months of nerve pain in her back/shoulder after the illness was over and my eighty year old neighbor suffered for about the same amount of time with upper body discomfort. It's something you don't want to get. |
|
I had it in middle school. It was right after my parents divorced, and in hindsight, that was pretty stressful and probably triggered it.
My boss's daughter got it in college. |
| Yes my co-worker had it |
| I had it twice in my mid 20s during law school. A coworker had it in her mid 30s. I know several elderly people who had it too. When I had it, it was horrible. Took me forever to figure out what it was, I thought shingles was only for older people and I kept applying over the counter creams of various sorts. Whoops. |
| My grandmother had it multiple times. My roommate in college had had it twice already. I got it while applying to law school at 23, it was very stressful. |

I know 6 people who have had it. One was a teenager, three were in their 40s, and two were senior citizens. The three that were in their 40s had long painful recoveries that lasted over a year. If you get it near your eye you can lose eyesight. Get the vaccine if you can, even if you are under 60. Back in December the Washington Post had a good article about shingles.

| I had it at 11, which is apparently unusual. My SILs father had it (60s). My neighbor had it (40s). |
| DH had it at 41 on his forehead. Has a pretty significant scar now |
| Mom had it in 60s; I had it in early 40s. |
| DH had it in his 50's. He was under a lot of stress, then his sister died. I thought it was poison ivy, which probably delayed his going to doctor, and it was heading toward his eye. Very dangerous. |
| Just my mother. |
| My mom at 50, my Dh at 35, our dd at 13 |
| Older poster here. Got it last year, the day after I turned 55. Not fun, quite painful actually, and the meds had some unpleasant side effects, but it did clear up and fortunately no long-term effects. |
Younger people probably do generally do better with it, but I don't think it's just an age thing. I had it in my late 20s and it was extremely painful. It was on my torso and I remember walking around doubled over in pain. I was fortunate in that it was mostly gone in a week or two. |
