+2 Ophelia is one of those names that you just can't use for an actual human person. It's a nice name, but you just can't do it. |
My parents adopted a dog with my name. A friend adopted a dog with her husband's name. Seriously, only the crazy have time to worry about this. Ignore the email. And, like one Pp mentioned, you are performing a service to any potential future child of hers. Ophelia? C'mon. |
My father named me after his ex wife.
Now that's weird. A cat with the same name as a kid? No big deal. |
I'm the OP, and I'm not going to answer the email. But, yes, Ophelia is a cat name, not a people name! Also, I'm hormonal from recently having a baby, which I gave a PEOPLE NAME. The kitten got a name that was NOT on my list of possibilities for dd. Anyway, my dh's two friends from home and their wives visited last year, and the wives and I were talking about baby girl names. They both mentioned "Mathilda" as a pretty name! One of them also liked "Clementine", and they didn't know (about) the song. They liked some other names that sound silly/weird to me, but which are apparently quite acceptable and even trendy in the UK, so maybe Ophelia isn't a weird choice by SIL. But even though this is silly, I wouldn't have named my kitten my SIL's secret baby name if I had known...and I now agree with DH that she is "odd." |
I would reply we only used that name for the birth certificate. We'll address the feline as that damn cat. |
My thoughts exactly! |
Aspergers isn't a mental disability? Uh, yes it is. |
You're an ass. It is part of the autism spectrum, and therefore a neurodevelopmental disorder. It is neither a mental disorder nor mental illness, and thus not part of psychopathology. |
I like your family's style! That's hilarious. ![]() |
--at the mean girls table. |
Maybe she was just really wasted, and not unhinged. |
Roald Dahl named his daughter Ophelia. She is now the president and executive director of Partners in Health, a pretty awesome organization. Which is just to say, Ophelia is a perfectly fine name, even if it's not to your taste.
And definitely don't change your kitten's name. |
I think your SIL should have sent the request to her brother. It's odd that she sent it to you - is it specifically your cat & not jointly the family cat with your husband? When my ILs have crazy requests, I tell them that DH runs point on that - gotta divide & conquer to keep the house running, you know? Now, if they have thoughts on the Thanksgiving menu, that's something I can help them with.
But that said, I'd probably at least consider SIL's request. Doesn't seem like that big a deal to me, so if it meant so much to her, then I'd think about it. |
When people don't remain close to family after leaving the house, there is usually a reason. Bet your husband isn't the nice guy you think he is. |
You are ignorant, and more than a little bitchy. |
