When someone mentions "W" schools, what schools specifically are they talking about?

I disagree, I think Wootton has always been considered better than WJ. WJ has improved significantly status-wise over the past 15 years. Oh yeah, and I went to WJ and graduated in '98.

Wootton is 47% white and <5% FARMS. Walter Johnson is 56% white and 8% FARMS. So Walter Johnson is whiter, but Wootton is wealthier (or more accurately, less poor). Which is more important for W status, white or wealthy?

Don't you know? For the purpose of classifying race in schools, Asians are considered white, so Wootton is actually like 70+% white/asian.

+1. Wootton '88. WJ was not considered top-tier back in the day.

Back in which day?

W status has nothing to do with white or wealthy. It is the reputation the school has with ivy recruiters and the like. And or those purposes, it is Whitman chrchill and WJ with bcc somewhere.

Wooton doesn't make it because it is in Rockville, not because it isn't whiter (or really more Asian) than the others. It just doesn't have the name rec. it is an excellent school, and most people on dcum now consider it a w school, but up until a few years ago it was not in that category.

I wonder why the schools have that reputation.

One of the W schools actually has part of the day for relaxation to reduce stress, seriously-wtf, this is supposed to be a great time in a kids life, why put so much pressure on them.

WJ, B-CC Einstein, Blair, Northwest, Sherwood used to be awful school and now they are right up with the W schools.

btw there is only one W school and that is and always has been Whitman but as I said the shine is not so bright anymore with the latest drug arrests and assaults a simple read of the weekly police report will show you that.

By what measure are these schools right up there? WJ is a W school.

Sherwood and Northwest have SAT scores of 1538 and 1577. Whitman is 1900 and Churchill is 1838. That is almost a 300 - 400 point spread. BCC is closet at 1711.

SAT Scores, Einstein only 62.3 percent scored a 3 or higher, at Churchill it is 85.9 and Whitman 90.2.

You didn't include Blair. It's actually the closest at 1747. You'd need the spread of scores (standard deviation at least) to know how different, if at all, the top schools are for scores.

Oops, I meant Blair is 1729.

I'm a parent at one of the W/BCC schools. If I had to do it again, my kid would be somewhere else.

The W/BCC schools have a different environment than other schools. Not better, different. The pressure is incredible, and IMO unhealthy for kids. I really wish I'd made a different choice.

Anyone on the Woodward High School question?

A "W" school back in the day?

Nope. It closed in the late 1980s. At that time all of the Bethesda schools (Woodward, WJ and B-CC) were considered a notch below Whitman, Churchill and Wootton. In my time, Whitman has always been considered the best neighborhood school but when my mom and dad were in school Blair was the best.
