Wow, it sounds like you've thought of every possible scenario!

The chances of an armed home invasion are slim to none for the average citizen. If you involved in a gang or are a drug dealer, or some other person who would be expected to have hoards of valuables locked up in the house, then I see how it would be something to be concerned about.

Most burglars are looking for easy targets (when people aren't home, unlocked doors or left open garage doors). Most people are not going to forcibly break into your home and hold you at gunpoint just to steal your TV/Computers/cash in the house/jewelry. It seems particularly unlikely if you've got an alarm system or a guard animal. The criminals could easily find another house that doesn't have those things that would be an easier target.

If most burglers are looking for an easy target, what do you suggest for deterring most rapists?

Since 2/3 of rapists are people that the victim knows, and 44% are below the legal age to even own a gun, I'd say being careful about who you are friends with and where you go.

Here we have an unarmed man guarded by two armed men, presumably with gun training (as professional security guards). And the prisoner still managed to get a gun from them. Now he is out roaming around NoVa with a gun, a clear threat to society.

"At about 3 a.m. Tuesday, Assaye overpowered the guards, taking one of the security officer's weapon. Police say one shot was fired, but no one was injured. It's not clear who fired the shot. Assaye is considered armed and dangerous."

Excellent summary but you forgot to point out to PP that law abiding citizens of DC are NOW ALLOWED GUNS. There was a whole Supreme Court case about it. So he/she can toss that tired canard from his/her arsenal of arguments on this topic.
