HGC wait pool

Is there waitlist different from wait pool ?

How come they invited those on the wait list to open house ?

In wait pool letter, there is no mention of open house.

It is strange they over accept. What happens IF everyone accepted insists join the class ?

Accepting 28 I think is okay. What is the limit for a 4th or 5th grade classroom? It just seems that they must have overaccepted because I believe that they stated that at the open house and because they didn't go back up to 28 with students on the waitlist.

waitlist is not considered as accepted, right ?

the reason of having waitlist/wait pool because they can fill into the class limit in case some accepted decide to leave.

i would assume 28 includes those in the wait list

The 28 did not include wait list. The 28 were accepted. 26 were ultimately in class and this included at least one from wait pool.

That's interesting. I understand accepting 28 kids, but once they were down to 26 (or 25 if at least one was from wait pool), did they offer spots to all the wait pool candidates or did they cut off at 26? I'm just curious how they decide on the desired class size vs the maximum class size.

How do you find out the statistics on A/WL/RJ? I'm curious for a different HGC school.

I have no idea how you find out. You could try calling AEI.

I learned the above from the presentation at the open house for accepted students. I believe that they said that they wouldn't get all 28 to accept and didn't intend for the class to be that large. And it wasn't.

The maximum number of students in a class is 27 at our HGC the last two years at least. Maybe they increased the maximum this year.

I believe they can have up to 28 students (as can regular classrooms as well). Which is ludicrous but there you are.

Is there any way for those in the wait pool to find out more about the school?

If your child is admitted from the wait pool you will be given an opportunity to tour.

My daughter told me that there are at least 4 people who passed the test in her class but they are not going to the center. If it is true, there is some chance the waitlisted can get into. But I have no idea why they don't go to the center.

There is always one or two in our school who don't go after they get in.

My child's teacher said that there is actually a good chance of getting off wait list.

There is no such a thing "passing the test". Either accepted or wait list/rejected.

I think this is the base for their preference to home school wait pool kids.

I can sign waiver for MCPS transportation (so it costs the same as the home school kids), and ask to have wait pool status extend as far as home school wait pool kids.

I know it is a long shot, but my kid deserve equal learning opportunity protected by the law.

Do not waste your time and energy. At most 1 kid will be added to Cold Spring from waitlist BEFORE SCHOOL YEAR WILL START. Almost never any Cold Spring applicant refuse to accept. According to COLD SPRING PRINCIPAL , they NEVER bring kids after school starts. They feel that classes are too big as is. Even if kids drop of move they do not add kids.
Other center have some movement from wait list, not COLD SPING.

Parent of one formal HGC student at COLD Spring, and another student who was waitlisted.
