HGC wait pool

Thanks.. and I think their parents must have requested for extension of wait pool status. My letter is very clear that it runs through Aug. 2015. I was very puzzled by the statement as common sense tells me no kids would leave without try out the program. It is like to have a stock option expires before the stock ever makes its IPO.

Thanks again, and I think I will ask MCPS to keep my kid in the pool as long as other kids are still in, not that I think my kid is really highly gifted -- but he is very close to be in and deserves a tryout if seat is available

I think this is the base for their preference to home school wait pool kids.

I can sign waiver for MCPS transportation (so it costs the same as the home school kids), and ask to have wait pool status extend as far as home school wait pool kids.

I know it is a long shot, but my kid deserve equal learning opportunity protected by the law.

All this means that, if MCPS has to make budget cuts, they might cut bus transportation to the magnet programs. They have proposed doing this in the past, but as far as I know, they've never actually done it.

Here's a link to the proposal for FY 2011. Cutting magnet bus transportation would have saved $4.9 million.

Also, there is no law that guarantees your child an equal learning opportunity.

There are kids who get in but don't go. Not many, but some.

OP here,

Maybe after Aug. 2015, all schools have their budgets based on the number of students. Is it difficult to reallocate fund if students move around. If so HGC picks kids only from home school -- and we are just out of luck even we don't ask for MCPS transportation.

OP, please don't assume it's true that only kids from the home school get in off the wait list after August, based on somebody's speculation on DCUM based on their own personal experience. Call MCPS and ask.

Yes I was the one speculating. It was just speculation. I have no idea, it is just what happened in my child's HGC class.

You should call.

OP here,

Thanks all, I will send a letter to appeal not the decision for placing my kid on wait pool (I think it is fair decision) but to have short life on the wait pool.

I know it is a long shot, but to keep "dream" alive.

Presumably if spots open for the wait pool, most of them would come open soon after the decision date for accepted students. Is that in early April?
Anonymous
Decision date is April 2nd.

But a lot of people accept and then could withdraw over the summer.

How many students are placed on the wait list?

in 2013 Cold Spring had 5 on wait pool (Not sure if anyone was ever selected).

Was that everyone in the wait pool? It says they compared his scores to five others in the wait pool.

As far as I know, some accepted, some wait pool, some rejected. Those who are in wait pool are considered qualified for HGC but they selected "more" qualified first.

In 2013, 340 applicants

55 accepted
5 wait pool
280 rejected

So it seems

Most rejected (normal)
Few accepted (outstanding)
very few on wait pool (very outstanding -

The Centers overaccept. I remember that at the open house for the Center my child attends they said that 28 students had been accepted. 26 were ultimately in the class (and that included at least one who had initially been in the wait pool).
