Molly, Margaret or Martha?

Just name her Molly
"My name is Martha, but you can call me Molly."
Doesn't work.
Molly is really pretty by itself

What names do you like?

Strange. There was a poster on the "Molly, Grace, Bridget or Tea" thread who chimed in that Molly is a common nickname for Margaret or Martha, which is not modern. Is this that poster? Not someone who is actually considering Margaret or, God forbid, Martha and the nickname Molly? I suspect so. Bit of sock puppeting, perhaps?

I was one of the posters on that thread who pointed on that Molly is a nickname for Mary - and I assure you, I'm not the OP on this thread, nor am I 60+ years old as many on that thread thought (I'm 30). I thought that it was common knowledge that Molly is a nickname - I guess not! Certainly didn't intend to start such forum controversy...

I vote Margaret! Very cute name. I have known people with random M names that use Molly as a nickname - for example, I know a Meredith who goes by Molly - I think you can make Molly a nickname if you want to. Or just go with Molly!

DCUM hates Margaret and Martha, and I don't understand why. They're "classic" English-language names along the lines of Caroline and Elizabeth, they meet the "resume test" (which is a stupid test), they are not names that even classist, stripper-obsessed DCUM would associate with low-class strippers, they don't end in -bella... I really don't get it.

I don't get why they hate Margaret or Martha yet love Molly.

I'm one of those people. It's just totally subjective taste and what sounds good to my ear. I don't care for hard G sounds (though I am very in love with L and K sounds for whatever reason), so Margaret sounds ugly to me. I'm not saying it IS ugly; obviously millions of parents who've named their kids Margaret would disagree! And Martha doesn't sound pretty to me either - it's too close to Bertha. I do like Molly, though - it sounds more musical to me. FWIW, my DD is named Kate, which is not at all musical but checks every other box for me (strong, simple, classic, I love every Kate I know personally, and I find it aesthetically pleasing on paper - I can't explain why this matters to me but it does!) It's still my favorite girl's name. My favorite boy's names are Mark, Christopher, Nicholas, Ellis, Lachlan, and I kinda like Duncan too. Note the Ls and Ks.

Name threads are crazy and I've allowed myself to join the fray many times, not that I'm proud of it. It's so stupid that we all squabble about something so completely subjective. *hangs head in shame*

Just my two cents.

I think Maggie makes more sense as a nickname for Margaret, and Molly is plenty pretty on its own.
