Molly, Margaret or Martha?

Anonymous
We have settled on calling our little girl Molly, but can't decide whether to just name her Molly, or name her Margaret or Martha with Molly as a nickname. Help?

Margaret! It's beautiful and has good nicknames

I love Margaret, but if you want a nickname, Molly is really cute!

Molly is great, but it's a nickname for Mary, not Margaret or Martha. If you want a formal name go with Mary, but Molly on its own is fine.

If you like Molly just call her Molly . Why complicate things by adding names?

Margaret. But Molly isn't a traditional nickname for Margaret.

I don't know why many people seem to obsess over what is a proper name vs. a nick name. I've known Jon that wasn't Jonathan, Gus that wasn't Augustus, Finn that wasn't Phineas.

I've known many a Molly whose first name was just that. It's a beautiful name. Your other choices are nice too. Go with whichever you like the most.

Martha

Molly is lovely. Margaret and Martha are old-fashioned and don't sound good to the ear IMO.

Strange. There was a poster on the "Molly, Grace, Bridget or Tea" thread who chimed in that Molly is a common nickname for Margaret or Martha, which is not modern. Is this that poster? Not someone who is actually considering Margaret or, God forbid, Martha and the nickname Molly? I suspect so. Bit of sock puppeting, perhaps?

Molly is a "nickname" for Mary.

Margaret is the least awful, but I dislike all these names. Especially Molly-I think this name is just terrible.

Are you trying for an M name?

Obsess? I think that's a little strong. The people who make those comments understand (as you apparently don't, PP) that it makes someone look like they come from an uneducated family if they are named Jon, not Jonathan. (Gus can also be a nickname for Gustav, and Finn is a name in its own right). Would you want to do this to your kid?

Remember, it's the child that needs to live with the name, probably for 100 years. The parents should put a lot of thought into a name, and it's annoying that some people don't.
