Well, but so what? If OP lives IB for Janney, it's reasonably close to their house, which I assume is an attractive feature of a school, as one actually has to travel there on a daily basis. There isn't going to be a school in that part of the city that does both -- draws from the neighborhood population AND has a reasonable share of AA kids -- because there are just fewer numbers of AA families in that part of town. |

I am the parent of an AA boy in a JKLM school. Although I am happy with the quality of education my ds is receiving, I have dealt with the issue of having my ds labeled negatively and I believe it is bc of his race. I notice that this has happened with the few teachers that are either less experienced and/or have poor classroom management skills. One teacher in particular had problems with all of the more energetic and spirited children but I feel like my ds' behavior was characterized in a more negative light when other children engaged in the same activity were not viewed the same way. His early childhood teacher, who was a first year teacher, told me she thought he had a learning disability. Having once been an early childhood teacher myself, I knew this was not the case and the teacher he had the following year (who was once a DCPS teacher of the year) thought the idea was ridiculous. Fwiw, he performs well academically and is in no need of specialized services.
I would like to add that I am not overly sensitive and completely back up his teachers when justified and counsel my ds accordingly. However, there is no denying teachers are human and some bring their personal biases to the job. When that is the case, I advocate like heck for my ds and have no problem questioning anything I feel is rooted in such biases. |
I know which schools feed where. Just like half the "JKLM". I still stand by my statement. If OP only wanted to know about Deal Feeders, she would have said "JL". |
The exact same thing happened to three black young boys that I know that are active. All three (who are related but in different schools) were labeled as trouble makers (including the kindergartener who was suspended). All came from upper middle class households and very smart. I was shocked that this practice is so prevalent. But most folks I know with AA boys have a fear of their child being labelled. It happens quite often. |
And the PK4 is now 50% IB, with many of the OOB families high SES families. |

We are a multiethnic family with 2 so far at a JKLM school.
No issues so far- the school seems very inclusive. In each of their classes so far there have been a handul of mixed kids, maybe 5-6. I think at a glance most of the kids pass for white until you really look at them or see their families. |

Janney doesn't have "Special Ed" - it is an inclusion school which means students with special needs are helped through pull outs or more commonly one-on-one work with the roving inclusion teachers that is conducted in the classrooms.
Janney also doesn't label kids as "bad;" behavioral problems are viewed as a child needing help coping with something (whether academic, social or emotional) and are dealt with by a team that includes the special ed coordinator, the school psychologist, other relevant teachers and staff members, and generally the parents. |
which post are you responding to? not sure i understand the point of this post. |
Which of these schools has an Early Childhood program? (Janney, Key, Lafayette, Mann, Murch) |

I'm curious as to why JKLMM doesn't include E!H and S.
Why aren't Eaton, Hearst and Stoddert considered in the same league? |
Because then the Janney boosters wouldn't have anything to do all day. |
While I agree that the most important thing is the quality of education at a school, diversity is also important. I went to a small (~400 students) middle school that was 95% white. It was very difficult being one of the few non-white kids. My high school was about 80% white and that was a much better experience. I wouldn't want to send my kids to a school where they were one of a few non-white kids. |
Not true. Signed, Parent of DC at Janney in PK. |
Agreed, from another PK parent. |
ok, two kids? |
