"Out of Africa" was a really great movie and the fact that I spent my childhood in Kenya at a time when it was still under British rule enabled me to relate to some of what one saw were scenes of the colonial past in that wonderful country.
The British had a truly privileged life there and it is now difficult to relate to it but the settlers - as the Brits were called who lived and farmed there during that colonial period - were strongly resistant to Britain granting majority rule ending their privileged life. Others led a somewhat decadent life and were referred to as the "Happy Valley Set" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Valley_set |
that’s probably it - too subtle for the OP |
| I think she's incredibly talented, but her "dingo ate my baby" Australian accent was TERRIBLE. |
So what have you seen? From her work in the 70s? The 80s? The 90s? The 2000s? |
Have you seen bridges of Madison county? Sophie's choice? Iron Lady? She can play a role like in Devil wears Prada to Kramer vs Kramer to Manhattan. That's talent. Plus she has aged beautifully and is known to be a professional and nice person. |
|
It might be an age thing. If you remember her early roles, you remember the buzz about how amazing this new young actress was. And she has never failed to deliver, film after film.
When I was a kid, I suppose her corollary was Sir Lawrence Olivier. He was practically a cliche for great acting. You were so tired of hearing about how wonderful he was, you might have failed to notice it was true. |
| Boomers their last dying star |
Maybe, but I was born in 1968, so: not a boomer. I think she is terrific. |
This. She is just a really, really, really good actress. She's versatile and incredibly professional. She works hard, and she delivers even in mediocre films or smaller roles. |
|
Even if you don't get it, she is widely considered to be one of the greatest living actors.
So maybe you aren't able to appreciate the work of a good actor, maybe your interests are different and her personality doesn't appeal to you. But your perspective is a minority opinion, and rather than get annoyed by it just accept it. |
+1 comedic performances don't get as much recognition as dramatic roles but it's hard work making people laugh - Death Becomes Her and Devil Wears Prada are two of my favorite Meryl movies. |
+100. Postcards from the Edge. |
| PP^^ above. I do also love her in dramatic roles. I thought she was perfect in Doubt and The Deer Hunter |
and doesn't take herself so seriously and is self-deprecating at time. makes me love her more! |
Agree with all this. It's Complicated is another great one. |
