To get back to the OP's problem, I would still do the portraits and just give your kids the love/attention they deserve. You can also seek out grandparent types that will dote on your kids if you think that's lacking. I did that for my DD since she has no grandfathers that are alive and she and the surrogate grandpa loved it.
