start talking about people you don’t know as well but see in a social context, they could be downplaying things. I remember in college how people would totally try to play down how much work they did. Very few people would admit to actually being on top of their work and studying like crazy (other than the all nighter to get work done), so I wouldn't be surprised if people try to tone down how intense they may be about their child's academics unless the forum was someplace that it made sense to discuss it. I know unless I felt some one had a similar outlook on finding a preschool or child rearing, I wouldn't really discuss it with them. When you open up your parent circle to people you don't really know - i.e. people you meet at the library, mom's groups, enrichment activities, open houses etc., I do believe it reflects what you see on DCUM because you are getting a wider net of personalities and will be in settings that might be conducive to certain discussions. |
We live in N.W. DC goes to Beauvoir. Yes, absolutely, the DCUM posters resemble the parents I know. They ARE the parents I know. Just another reason I'm trying to get DH to move back to Wisconsin. |
Some, but not most, of the parents I know do resemble DCUM. I just don't hang out with them. |
I would LOVE to meet some of the more clever posters on DCUM. Where are they? |
Everywhere. All kinds of people everywhere. |
I know no one in real life like the freaks who post on here. |
This message board is a good introduction to Human Sociology. However, as mentioned earlier, this forum is anonymous, so anyone can say anything about anything without worrying.... Most of the controversial topics would NEVER be said face to face, unless they were really close friends. As much as I get excited about the idea of a catfight, it never happens in real life. ![]() |
You obviously go to all the wrong bars and clubs. ![]() |
You're exactly right-I am sick unto death of people in these service positions discussing educational consultants, big 3 schools, top-tier preschool interview tactics, 401Ks, etc. The nerve! |
