How many college visits, and how far did you travel

NP. I am also curious of how early you started visiting. My freshman child is interested but I think it is way too soon. Is summer before junior year appropriate?

With DC 1 we did a couple in the summer before junior year to test the waters - mostly in places we were driving by. DC 2 started the fall of junior year but had a narrower list to begin with. The reality is that until you've got SAT scores in hand you can't take it too seriously because you don't know what's realistic. So spring of junior year was for more serious visits.

Yes, I think thats appropriate in a very casual way. Not so much to see if a particular school is the right fit but to get used to the process, a kind of practice run. I would not start with a school that your DC is particularly interested in. And you are right to hold off, it isn't healthy to start in 9th and it just ramps up the pressure, even if the pressure is self-imposed.
