We started off allowing our children to use it for games only. The older one discovered Netflix but it came in handy when we needed to get stuff done and we have parental controls in place so I thought no big deal. Soon, my younger child started using it. The younger child used it for writing and phonics so I was ok with that. It wasn't long until DC#2 also discovered Netflix.
We don't watch tv during the week but did allow the iPad until we realized the educational games were being ignored by both children because of Netflix. We then decided to limit the iPad to weekends. Our children were constantly fighting over the iPad so we decided to take it away indefinitely. Our children are early readers anyway but I did notice that we read so much more with the iPad out of the picture. I only have a foreign language app on my phone so I will sometimes let them play with that if I need to do some lazy parenting. The iPad is like crack for them so we cannot give it to them in doses. |
