Of course, you will send them anyway, because you know, deep down, that this is a bit of a bullshit stat and that actual rape -- as in being forcibly raped, or raped while unconscious, or passed out drunk, is less common.

"Actual" rape? Charming. What's it like living in the 1950s?

It's 2014, where a man can have sex with a woman, who does not object in anyway, and be branded a "rapist" because he "failed to obtain her enthusiastic consent."

And even if he does obtain her enthusiastic consent, he can STILL be branded a rapist if the woman chooses to brand him that way.

You're mixing up a few big issues here.

- You're conflating legitimate accusations of rape with the fact that some people just suck, which is a whole different issue. Men and women both have been lying about sex, money, theft and thievery for millennia. False accusations of rape are awful too. But your approach has the effect of tarring legitimate accusations of rape with a broad brush of doubt.

- The real problems lie with the difficulty of ascertaining consent, for example when one or both parties are drunk. Nobody has easy answers here (cameras in every dorm room? no way.) But the solution is NOT to imply that most accusations are false.

I dont think anyone implied that most accusations are false. On the other hand, I see a lot of feminists mis-using a stat that says 2-8 percent of accusations are false and using this as justification to publically destroy any male accused of rape without any trial because 98% are guilty anyway, because Statistics.

The 2-8 percent is for known false accusations. There are a large number of rape accusations that get dropped and we don't often know why. Maybe she was unfairly pressured to recant, or maybe she knew that her accusation was unfair and realized that she needed to stop before it went to trial.

The reality is that for most rape accusations, we really don't know what happened and never will. If we want to encourage people to come forward and tell the truth, we need a media and activist culture that does not constantly and villify and destroy either the accusor OR the accused.

I call BS on this. I am a 40 something woman who went to a school with a solid party/ Greek culture..and had lots of friends and I know of no one who claimed to raped at our campus. I had friends at other colleges and this wasn't even on our radar .

Your friends simply don't trust you with this information.

Wow. As a woman and a mother of a boy, there is SO MUCH that is offensive about your term of "actual rape."

Actually 1/3 women are raped, only 1/5 in college.

Source, please?

I'm a strong feminist. But I think exaggerating the problem can backfire and hurt the very women we're trying to protect.

+1. I'm another strong feminist who thinks the 1 in 3 stat is bullshit.

I think the recent explosion of rape stories in the media is already starting to backfire. Somehow the conversation shifted from "there is a rape crisis" to "false rape accusations are as bad/almost as bad as rape."

If you continue reading past the hyphen you will find that the term "actual rape" is defined with scenarios that most people understand to be rape.

And the other side of that coin is not to assume that all accusations are true. Sorry, but you can't automatically assume a man has raped a woman in all instances. Yes, many times it's true. Certainly there are legitimate accusations of rape. But often it's simply a case of regret or even malicious intent on the woman's part. There are too many shades of grey in instances like these, that it's irresponsible to believe one party over the other in all cases. Both sides need to be heard - always.

Yes, of course, a person is innocent until proven guilty by a court of his peers. What's offensive is your use of the word "often" in combination with your seemingly grudging admission that there are some "legitimate" accusations.

You are a fucking asshole. 20 years ago, it was 1 in 4.

What's offensive is your apparent inability to admit that yes, there ARE women who make false rape accusations.

Yea... all those little girls love to lie about uncle johnnie and their mom's newest boyfriend raping them. They probably wanted it and then regretted it. You realize the statistic on how many of these happen before the age of 14, right?
