Help me understand my DH's drinking

OP said "equivalent" of 3-5 and also mentioned higher end beer with more alcohol content. So, does that mean possibly that her DH is drinking more like 2-3 beers with the alcohol equivalent of 3-5 Bud Lights?

The line is a little arbitrary, but for my part, I see nothing wrong with 1-2 even if it's every night. 2-3 is a bit high for my comfort level, but alarm bells aren't ringing. 3-5 is outside of my comfort zone.

I'll frequently have a glass of wine for dinner and then, a couple hours later, sip the equivalent of 2 shots of bourbon watching TV at night.

My DH does the same although less each night 1-2 glasses of beer or wine, BUT recently confessed that he was leaving work early to get in a drink or 2 or 3 before he got on the train. I told him that he and his brother were going to have problems because their father is an alcoholic and they are constantly trying to hide their drinking. He told me I was a nag and after much discussion I just dropped it.
3 months later his brother says to the 2 of us that his doctor has warned him he is drinking way too much and better cut back.
I didn't 't comment, didn't say a word, wasn't like "i told you so" but DH confronted me later because I didn't react. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

No OP it is not just you.

He is drinking too much.

Not only is he spending too much money on alcohol, but he also is endangering his physical health in the long run. All that drinking is very toxic to his body organs. {My Father died of too much drinking so I know this first hand.}

Even though he holds down a job and all that, what he is doing is still very unhealthy.

I say he needs to change his behavior because not only is it costly and annoying to you, but is also is damaging his health in the long run.

He is an alcoholic OP. Is he of Irish heritage? Many of my Irish relatives have severe drinking problems.

The CDC publishes guidelines for moderate drinking. I would start there.
