That's ridiculous. CC math is not some completely different kind of math. A lot of how math is taught now is different from when us parents were in school…and truthfully a lot of it is better. I never had a clue what I was doing conceptually in algebra or deriving formulas in geometry…. So much of the conversation around CC arises from a lack of knowledge/understanding. |
Do you have data to support this statement? |
Do you have data to show it's worse? |
You are the one who made the statement. |
No, actually, I'm not. There are multiple posters on this thread. |
Then I guess you are not the poster who asked for data. So, why are you replying? |
+1000 Common Core is not anything new, it's core building blocks, standard stuff that's been taught for years. No voodoo here: http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/3/introduction/ The problem is that many of the textbook companies have rebranded their crappy non-CC worksheets and materials as "Common Core" when many of them aren't or don't have anything to do with CC, along with the breathless pundits who are all out there trashing CC for no good reason other than what they perceive as political gain, misguidedly thinking CC is something the Obama Administration devised and evilly foisted on unsuspecting 'Merikans when in fact it was developed by states from various long-existing standards. Just because you heard something on FOX doesn't make it true, folks... |
The proof is in the pudding. And, so far, the pudding is runny and tasteless. |
Oh, yes, you just described Diane Ravitch. |
I replied because I was wondered whether the PP who asked the other PP for data to support the statement "truthfully a lot of it is better" had any data to show that it is worse. |
This actually does describe many opponents of the Common Core standards. Not all, but many. |
Let me guess, you are one of the folks running around out there holding up what you think are examples of bad "Common Core math problems" and poorly worded math questions along with other curriculum examples touted as "Common Core" that are flying around on message boards, chain emails, conservative blogs, et cetera - but here's the fundamental problem with all of that: Common Core is a set of standards. It's not "math problems" - it's not "worksheets" - it's not curriculum. There is no such thing as a "Common Core math problem" or "Common Core worksheet". And if you don't even understand that basic reality, then you aren't particularly qualified to be talking about Common Core at all, let alone bashing it. |
Then why aren't there "good" samples out there? |
Because stuff like "yesterday my child had math homework, and everything was fine" typically doesn't go viral. |
Great! Could you post a sample of good test questions please? I've only seen confusing oens. |
