| I wear stuff that meets 2 out of 3 criteria: Comfortable/convenient, trendy, looks good on me. Skinnies worn with riding boots in the fall isn't the most flattering look on my body but since it meets the first two criteria, I'll happily wear them anyway. I still can't bring myself to wear skinnies by themselves because the trendiness is all they've got going for them. Although I may have to give in soon because even my non-fashion-forward 60 year old mother is wearing them now. She does have the body to pull them off and they look great on her, but it's embarassing to be less trendy than mom. |
Straight jeans are generally less flattering for me. For me it is all about the cut in the waist/hip. I am slim but curvy (waist is 9" smaller than largest hip measurement) and of average height with longish legs. My hips are the widest part of me. Pants that fall straight from the hip, a la straight legs, are generally the least flattering. Pants that fit in the waist and follow the curve of my hip, whether ending in a boot cut or skinny ankle, are much more flattering. There are plenty of boot cuts and skinny jeans that look terrible on me, because they don't fit me well up top. But I can look good in either if the waist/hip ratio is correct. |
I don't take straight to mean falling straight from the hip (those sound more like trouser jeans). My straight jeans fit through the thigh and just have a slightly wider opening than skinny jeans, but aren't as flared as boot cuts. |
Yes, and those don't look good on everyone. It's great they look good on you. You should definitely wear them then! I like that test above - that clothes should meet two out of three of the criteria. That seems like a good way to look at dressing. |
| I think the issue with what is more flattering really depends on the outfit as a whole. I have a generous tummy after two kids and rarely wear heels, so a combo of a tunic/a-line shirt, skinny jeans and flats or boots is much more flattering than a tighter shirt, bootcuts and heels. Of course if you wear a super tight shirt and skinnies or a super loose shirt and bootcuts, you are aren't going to look great. |
| Gah! I have yet to buy a pair of skinny jeans. Who has time? So another fashion trend passes me by. |
| I think there is a difference between someone being fashionable and something being trendy. Fashionable to me means someone who expresses herself through the medium of clothing. Trendy to me means someone who reads a magazine and switches from boot cut to skinny jeans and back again because a corporation is telling her to. The most fashion-forward people I can think of do not necessarily follow trends - they may start some trends but mostly they are just having fun. |
They look awful on 99.9% of the people. |
