I think moderation is probably best and we should all wear straight jeans.
They don't look good on me. Skinnies are better for me (short with muscular legs; straight and boot cut jeans make me look super stubby). I dread skinnies looking dated - then I will have to choose between looking reasonably stylish and reasonably attractive. And I'll be the one here ranting about fashion hegemony.
Straight jeans are generally less flattering for me. For me it is all about the cut in the waist/hip. I am slim but curvy (waist is 9" smaller than largest hip measurement) and of average height with longish legs. My hips are the widest part of me. Pants that fall straight from the hip, a la straight legs, are generally the least flattering. Pants that fit in the waist and follow the curve of my hip, whether ending in a boot cut or skinny ankle, are much more flattering. There are plenty of boot cuts and skinny jeans that look terrible on me, because they don't fit me well up top. But I can look good in either if the waist/hip ratio is correct.
I don't take straight to mean falling straight from the hip (those sound more like trouser jeans). My straight jeans fit through the thigh and just have a slightly wider opening than skinny jeans, but aren't as flared as boot cuts.
Yes, and those don't look good on everyone. It's great they look good on you. You should definitely wear them then! I like that test above - that clothes should meet two out of three of the criteria. That seems like a good way to look at dressing.
