Boot Cut vs. skinny jeans --- why would we change?

For those who value being in-sync with fashion trends, what makes it worthwhile for you?

I hate skinny jeans and think guys look horrible in them. I can't wait for this fad to die.

I just bought a couple pairs of skinny jeans....given my history with fashion, that should mean that they are on the way out now. You can thank me later.

Preach.

Lol. This is me. Happens every time I finally decide to give in to a trend.

I'm a fattie and bought skinny jeans because every fashionable woman I saw (in real life or in media) was wearing skinnies not boot cuts. But I know I look terrible. I guess I'm a fashion victim, right?

Well, are we stupid or what? The "experts" are telling us two different things and expect us to pay them both times! You can't credibly convince the public that you know what you're talking about if you tell us completely opposite things.

It's called fashion, OP. Participation is voluntary. Clearly you have chosen to opt out if you are referring to skinny jeans as "new."

+1 I've finally given in and purchased a pair of booties, I'm sure they'll be on next year's out list.

But to answer OP, skinnies have been around since 2006. There just comes a point in time where your look does look dated. Everyone thought they looked hot in acid-wash jeans in the 80s, but were you still wearing them in the 90s? And look, they came back in style in the 2000s. So keep your bootcuts if you love them.

But, as an owner of 4 pairs of boot cut jeans and one pair of straight leg, and I'm probably in the 10% of women over 40 who can actually wear skinny jeans (5'6" and 125lbs),....

WHY would we all switch to skinny jeans when we learned during the boot cut phase that the wider ankle balances the width of the butt. We were told (and I agree) that the boot cut flatters by creating a curvy line. I am not one who likes to follow fashion/fads just b/c some random people in Hollywood or NYC say "boot cut is out" -- the reason they are saying "X is out" is b/c they want to get my money. In order to get my money, they have to make me believe that I don't already own what I need. I have jeans. They fit (more or less). Why do I need the new skinny jeans when the same people are the one who convinced all of us that the most flattering style was the boot-cut-balancing-jeans?

Now, they want to tell me that the product I bought on their recommendation isn't good enough? And that I should give them more $$ b/c this other product (which is what they previously told me was unflattering) is now really good for me?

Are we dumb enough to follow this advice?

It's called current fashion styles. If you like your boot cuts, then wear them. Fashions change and evolve from time to time to keep things fresh, to give a career to those in the textile industry and to stimulate the economy. It's been like this for centuries. Yes, there were even certain "in" styles when the Pilgrims came over.

From bellbottoms, to bootcut, to skinnies, from high waist to low waist, to mid waist... no need to rant about it, just wear what you like!

Good Christ--do you mean there's been an epidemic of women over forty not being able to put their pants on!??! Why?? Did, did ... did their legs fall off??

Boot cut looks best on me. I adjust for wash and color, that's it.

*clap clap*

And it's all about how you're built. I am a total fatso, but skinny jeans look much better on me than boot cut jeans do.

Everyone whines when fashion turns away from what flatters them personally. You'll all survive. To everything there is a season.

I can't believe the amount of emotional energy people put into the topic of skinny jeans. Wear them, don't wear them. But the anger about them, the inability to just go on with your life if you don't want to wear them, the insistence on explaining not only why you don't want to wear them but why everyone who chooses to wear them are COMPLETE MORONS--this I don't get.

If you feel the need to post angry rants about why skinny jeans are terrible and women are being hoodwinked into wearing them, you're airing your own insecurities (and apparent belief that women in general are pretty dim).

Are you unable to purchase the style of jeans you like? Have they disappeared from the market? No? Then just wear them and live your life.

I think moderation is probably best and we should all wear straight jeans.

They don't look good on me. Skinnies are better for me (short with muscular legs; straight and boot cut jeans make me look super stubby). I dread skinnies looking dated - then I will have to choose between looking reasonably stylish and reasonably attractive. And I'll be the one here ranting about fashion hegemony.

I'm 5'6" and 170. Wouldn't be caught dead in skinny jeans.
