Any student who is new to the US after May 30 is exempt from the Reading test for the following spring. This exemption only applies to Reading. For math, everyone takes it regardless of whether you speak English, whether you've been in the US your whole life or whether you just got here. If a kid shows up a week before the SOL, he/she has to sit for the math test.

Yeah, it makes no sense. A kid who doesn't speak a word of English is expected to understand math word problems.

Math is the universal language, or is that love

It's love.

Yup word problems and directions are so easy to read in a foreign language. Especially if you use different numerals.

Yep, that is why south arlington schools have lots of assistance to help get those kids achievement up and spend little time differentiating the kids who are middle of the road or gifted. When we moved to north arlington that was reversed

What about the lower rated schools in north arlington like Washington and Lee?

This headline is a little misleading, isn't it? Lots of Virginia schools seem to be doing just fine.

About 90% of the schools in Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun are fully accredited. All are accredited in Falls Church City, and Alexandria has more schools with issues.

Does anyone have the full list of the not fully accredited schools in the area?

Sigh. Ramsey, Patrick Henry, Jefferson-Houston, Hammond MS, and TCW. There is a lot of work to be done. But it's good to see that not only the obvious schools (like George Mason or Lyles Crouch) but also Mount Vernon, Cora Kelly, and John Adams were fully accredited.

Please, Washington Lee may be lower "rated" but it is the only one in north arlington - nothing like the consistent low ratings of each and every south arlington school.

I really hate that the S. Arlington schools get marked as low ratings. I mean SURE they are lower than N. ARlington High Schools, that does not make them "low". I mean maybe it does for Arlington, but seriously I grew up in a state where the schools consistently scored in the 50th percentile. Somehow I went to college and law school with my "horrible" education. I am jsut trying to say that people here need to get some perspective if they think scoring in the 80s is "low" and "horrible" when it comes to education in this country.

If they we're all in the 80's that would be great, they are not. Not even close. Even the white kids don't score as high as a demographic as they do in north arlington.

On the other hand, Wakefield is fully accredited this year, and that cannot be said for Stuart, its Fairfax neighbor with similar demographics.

Still, wakefield is still much lower than WL. With the exception of Henry, the south arlington schools are at best in the 80s. Many in 70s. Claremont and key in the north may get a break bc they are immersion. Unacceptable.

One funny thing - well funny, sad thing - Cora Kelly is supposed to be a Science and Math focus school yet there Science scores slipped significantly from last year.

Why is Stuart HS' rating acceptable? I don't get why there is so much angst about S Arlington Schools, in particular Wakefield, but not about lower performing schools in Fairfax. Is it South Arlington people demanding more resources or redistricting? Is it N Arlington people with a need to diss South Arlington? Is it Fairfax people feeling a need to bash Arlington?

I presume they added the Science and Math focus because Cora Kelly was low performing. IIUC its not at all uncommon for school systems to add special programs to lower performing schools.
