Camp Hidden Meadows?

Mine went for two weeks and did different activities (horseback one week, mountain biking the next). Some things they do every week and some things are a little different--they plan a schedule for each camper based on how many weeks they will be there. In addition to the standard things there are lots of activities to choose from, so a kid could choose to do the same thing every week or pick a bunch of different things and do a couple of them each week. You pick them before you get there, sometime in the spring.

My 2 sons just got back from Camp Hidden Meadows. It was their first time there. They are 13 and 11 and stayed for 1 week. I thought the camp was in a beautiful spot and the counselors were very friendly. Unfortunately, the boys had some complaints. The cabins were basic which was fine but my son had spiders over his head and was not comfortable sleeping there. Lucky for him, another camper brought a fly swatter and took care of it for him. My husband went into the bathroom when we picked them up and counted 6 spiders in one stall.
The boys said that they didn't have enough to eat most meals. They did like the food they were served and there was a good variety. However, they weren't allowed to have second helpings. These are 2 growing boys. They were only allowed to have milk at breakfast. They also ran out of lemonade 1/2 way through the week. They only had water to drink.
My older son, who was in the Sequoia group, went hiking at Seneca Rocks and White Water Rafting. My younger son was 11 and never left the camp. He did not have as good a time. I did not see the lake that was on the video. The boys had limited access to the pool. I was hoping they would have more experience at the lake and with the horses. That cost extra.
I believe we will be looking for a different camp next year. Sadly, the 11 year old does not want to go to another sleep away camp.

My kids complained that there is very liittle to do on the weekends and the counselors seemed to text alot (!). They also mentioned some food issues..like we were only allowed 1 slice of watermelon. Didn't keep them from wanting to go back but..

My 13 year old and his friend went. The good: White Water rafting, zip line, good food, some fun activities. The bad: counselors in boy's cabin not responsible, played roughhouse, including hitting (in a fun way, but rough.) They let chaos reign at some points. My child found it amusing. The friend did not, and was very upset and very scared of being hit or messed with by the counselors. He did not know who to talk to about it, and suffered through. I asked my son if he would want to go back, and he said it was fun but considers it a once in a lifetime experience, and so do I! This was toward the end of summer, maybe there was some burn out or boredom setting in from the counselors, but I now question the training and supervision of these young people.

This is completely not true. I saw my childs counselor texting both when I dropped off and picked up. My child also discussed her cousleor receiving a new Iphone she ordered on-line while they were there.

Actually it is true that they don't have cell service. The Radio Astronomy Observatory down the road (we took a tour) regulates those things in that area.

Both our girls and their male cousin attended the camp and came home with great reports. It was their first time and they enjoyed the many activities. They commented that the food was very good. My husband felt that the cabins were in great shape. We also like the new pool they opened last summer. I was impressed at how welcoming the staff and directors were.

We really have nothing but good things to say and plan to go back

Our 9 year old did a rock climbing trip to Seneca Rocks. She also did the overnight camping trip. For the horses you have to sign up prior to the summer.

Maybe something has changed...checked with my child again. Counselors have working phones..and even 1 kid though this is not allowed.

according to my kids - the greatest summer camp! they all three loved it, and all three are going back for more!

dd - age 15, stayed 4 weeks.
ds - age 13, stayed 3 weeks.
ds - age 10, stayed 1 week.

daughter focused on water, hiking, and climbing. older son especially loved the biking. Younger son wants to stay at least 3 weeks.

pros:
really cool counselors from all over the world
daughter is a vegetarian and raves about the salad bar
all three say you can eat as much as you want
they got to select their activities
lots to do on weekends. a different schedule but definitely lots to do.

cons:
cell phones don't work - even if you sneak one in, it just says searching for a signal until the battery finally dies. (but honestly, it's probably good, especially for my teens.)

mom (that's me) opinion: you really should drive there at least once - it's beautiful! the cabins are newer than at other camps my kids have attended. they came home tired and happy.
