My dd is being made fun of for eating salads

What are you complaining about? She's probably a tree huger too!

She adds protein to the salads, in the form of either baby shrimp or grilled chicken. Sometimes hard boiled egg.

What about fat? Dressing?

I agree with this.
I'm worried about this girl.

I can't believe the mean-spirited comments on this thread. Somehow it's not normal if a teenager likes salad??

OP --good luck to your DD. Hopefully she can use this situation to learn to stick up for herself and not be hurt over what some of her peers might think of her.

Yep. The DCUM mom bullies proudly raising their daughters to be bullies, too!

I woder if her lunches have a bad odor-- shrimp and hard boiled eggs are not typical high school lunch fare partly because they have a distinctive odor. If she insists on only eating salads at lunch with these sorts if noticeable odors then she definitely needs to learn some self-deprecating humor for when her peers respond to this.

She doesn't only eat the salads. I'm pretty sure it's only about twice a week for lunch. And she's eating in a lunchroom with over 100 kids in it - surely her lone salad (which has a cold pack in the bag) is not causing a distinct smell.

Are there any special interest groups at DDs school that might have people that are also similarly concerned about eating healthy? Something like a Vegetarians club, or Environmentalist, or all Organic. Finding people who don't find DD's salad habits odd might make her feel a bit more comfortable with it.

I'm a vegetarian and have been since high school. I didn't have many problems with it there precisely because I had a group of friends that were also veggie. But it was (and still is) a nightmare at extended family get togethers. My extended family is full of overweight people with very unhealthy eating habits. I've had to put up with a lot of "rabbit food" type comments that are probably pretty similar to what your daughter is going through and it's not fun.

OP,

This is life. She has two choices: Stop bringing salads for lunch or continue bringing them and learn how to handle the teasing.

I think it's weird that she's being teased for this. But if it's too upsetting/distracting, she could give up salads for lunch Monday - Friday until she felt strong enough to handle the comments.

Good luck.

So odd. I teach HS. Chop't opened up across the street from school. The kids love it.
