Can I take my dog inside as long as there is no food sold?

Otherwise, no.

Your dog is a pet. Pets belong at home.

what does that mean? If I have a service dog/animal, who gets to decide if it's a serious or honest need? This is the same as those handicapped parking spots - do I have to LOOK disabled enough for your liking to have my service dog with me?

If you have an actual service animal, or a handicapped parking tag, you have a real, honest need.

If you don't, you don't. Duh. Your Fifi doesn't count, okay?

A real service dog assigned to someone with real needs has been trained properly to be a service dog for that particular need. Your lab who likes to jump on people and run up to them is not a service dog, even though he may reduce your anxiety. If you have that much anxiety going out in public, please seek out a service dog who deals with those with PTSD.

Is there a rule against being a jack ass? We should have one. I know he loves his pet but a little consideration would go a long way. Dogs do not belong everywhere

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, I would be a little shocked if I saw a non-service dog in the library. I'm just wondering what makes the owner a jack ass? What precisely is the harm to others?

I would LOVE to see dogs in the library!

Read to a dog programs at libraries are actually very common and Mo Co has some. Children read out loud to a dog, which is less threatening when making mistakes, than to a grown-up.

Hell to the no you can't bring your damn dog any where you damn please.

My god, the entitlement many people have. YOU may think your dog is just great. I don't care for the sudden need for a dog to defecate or urinate on the merchandise. I've seen it happen. It makes for a difficult situation for the store owner.

Not to mention is the dog's shot record up to date, are they de-wormed, are they currently having diarrhea, do they bite (but only sometimes). The list could go on.

AND, for what it's worth... I am a dog owner who loves her dog but won't take it to a store because i have no need to.

I have severe allergies to dogs, as do many other people. Allergies can be an annoyance (swollen eyes, runny nose, sneezing, itching) all the way up to causing asthma attacks and severe allergic reactions.

Oh please. Get over yourself. My dog is a non-shedding breed. There's more stray animal hair on sweater of cashiers at Safeway than there could ever be on my dog. You're exposed all the time, unwittingly.

You don't have a dog. Stop lying.

You, nor your dog are special snowflakes that need to be tied at the hip at all times. They're pets. Stores are for people.

But thankfully, you have several completely reasonable options:
- Leave your dog outside.
- Leave your dog at home.
- If the weather is ok, leave your dog for a short time in a car with a cracked window.

Not sure why pet haters are so attracted to this forum, but take it elsewhere. There are plenty of places that are pet friendly and it is in the best interest of pet owners to know where those places are.

No one cares that you hate dogs. They are here to stay. Kind of like kids.

My dog would barely look at you, but other people might wonder if they could call men in white coats to lock you up for being crazy. Only crazy people snarl at dogs.

Op here.

Woah. I was just asking because that is a rumor (of sorts) that I heard.

I cannot believe all the names I was called for just asking.
I know that the Barnes and Noble in Bethesda allows dogs which is why it often smells like urine sometimes.

I would not try to take my dog everywhere. I actually was just telling my friend that I had to pick up something at Best Buy from the service dept, but I would have to go home and drop off my dog first. She said "no, as long as it is not a food establishment, you can take in your dog". I thought that was a logical rule, but perhaps an unwritten "don't ask, don't tell" type of thing. As in, if you take in your dog, they won't tell you to leave, but they aren't inviting everyone to bring their dogs (like pet stores do).

This shows how ridiculous you are.

It is not.

If you feel better having the dog with you, it qualifies as a service animal and is permitted. Get a service animal vest for the dog. Here's one that comes with 50 cards to hand out explaining the Americans with Disabilities Act:
