So much misinformation in one thread. This thread, is indeed a dog whistle.
First, I highly encourage anyone reading this thread to please watch the video. This facility that we are talking about is far from the lap of luxury that OP makes it sound like. These "suites" are cinder block cells with a tv stuck on the wall, and will house two families. The families are locked in and cannot leave the facility. They do not look comfortable or luxurious at all. They have tried to paint and remodel the facility to make it less frightening to children, which seems extremely reasonable. Second, as for the medical care and dental care, these refugees will be in the country for about a month. They're giving them a checkup to make sure they're not suffering from some horrible disease or dental issue while they're here. You want to lock up sick people in a detention center? Third, have any of you been to a homeless shelter lately? They do, indeed, have flat screen tvs and ping pong tables! At least the one DH worked at. Fourth, are any of you aware of the Federal government's massive efforts to reduce homelessness? And guess what, it's working! http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/05/28/the-push-to-end-chronic-homelessness-is-working/ |
OP, here. Yes, I have. I volunteer regularly and this would be a luxury to what I am seeing for our homeless. |
Maybe instead of wasting your time whining about refugees like someone with no class or morals, you should buy a ping pong table off craigslist and donate it to the shelter you volunteer for. |
I thought America had gone soft on our poor. Isn't that what Fox News and the conservatives on this board have been saying forever? |
Advocating for American homeless hardly constitutes having no class or morals. However, criticizing someone who volunteers his/her time to help those less fortunate is indeed classless and lacking in morals. You have no idea what OP does or doesn't donate besides his/her time. Look in the mirror and ask yourself if you are doing all that you can to help the homeless in America instead of criticizing someone else for their efforts. |
Hmm, it isn't OP who is lacking in class or morals. |
Thank you OP, I'm sure you're very sweet and wonderful when you're not complaining about treating children humanely. |
No... it's definitely OP. |
You really need to work on your reading comprehension. At no time have I said that illegal immigrant children--of any age--be treated inhumanely. I simply state, quite rightly, that homeless American citizens--yes, and many are children--are not receiving the same consideration, accommodations or concern. Compassion should not be reserved for those born outside of the US. We have US children who are hungry, homeless, living in dangerous situations and I am not seeing the same level of outrage, concern or compassion for these children. The hypocrisy is astounding. |
No....you are definitely wrong and most likely purposely so. |
JOHN vs. JUAN
You have two families: "John Legal" and "Juan Illegal". Both families have two parents, two children, and live in Arizona .. John Legal works in construction, has a Social Security Number and makes $25.00 per hour with taxes deducted. Juan Illegal also works in construction, has NO Social Security Number, and gets paid $15.00 in cash "under the table". Ready? Now pay attention.... John Legal: $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or $52,000.00 per year. Now take 30% away for state and federal tax; John Legal now has $31,231.00. Juan Illegal: $15.00 per hour x 40 hours = $600.00 per week, or $31,200 per year.Juan Illegal pays no taxes. Juan Illegal now has $31,200.00. John Legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year. John Legal now has $24,031.00. Juan Illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the state and local clinics and emergency hospitals at a cost of $0.00 per year. Juan Illegal still has $31,200.00. John Legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food stamps or welfare. John Legal pays $500.00 per month for food, or $6,000..00 per year. John Legal now has $18,031.00. Juan Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for food stamps, WIC and welfare. Juan Illegal still has $31,200.00. John Legal pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per year. John Legal now has 9,631.00. Juan Illegal receives a $500.00 per month Federal Rent Subsidy. Juan Illegal pays out that $500.00 per month, or $6,000.00 per year. Juan Illegal still has $ 31,200.00. John Legal pays $200.00 per month, or $2,400.00 for car insurance. Some of that is uninsured motorist insurance. John Legal now has $7,231.00. Juan Illegal says, "We don't need no stinkin' insurance!" and still has $31,200.00. John Legal has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, etc.. Juan Illegal has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, and what he sends out of the country every month.. John Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work. Juan Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family. John Legal's and Juan Illegal's children both attend the same elementary school. John Legal pays for his children's lunches, while Juan Illegal's children get a government sponsored lunch. Juan Illegal's children have an after school ESL program. John Legal's children go home. Now, when they reach college age, John Legal's kids may not get into a State School and may not qualify for scholarships, grants or other tuition help, even though John has been paying for state schools through his taxes, while Juan Illegal's kids "go to the head of the class" because they are a minority. John Legal and Juan Illegal both enjoy the same police and fire services, but John paid for them and Juan did not pay. If you vote for or support any politician that supports illegal aliens... You are part of the problem! |
. When people have no moral leg to stand on to stand on, they too often resort to personal attacks on those who are actually doing something instead of just pontificating. |
This is so insane. How could an undocumented immigrant possibly get a federal rent subsidy? What reality are you living in? What kind of "subsidy" is this, anyway? Section 8? And since when do Federal programs require no social security number to get benefits? You can just get all this money with no identifying information? I'm not even sure that you could get food stamps without a social security number! Just so much flat out wrong with your point of view. |
Maybe someone who makes the effort to post an incredibly misleading thread on an anonymous message board is just pathetic and needs someone to let them know? What is OP's agenda here? |
So... wait... were you sock-puppeting and acting like someone else was defending you? Anyway, where is the hypocrisy exactly? Is everything a zero-sum game in your life? These children aren't living in luxurious accommodations, and neither are homeless children. There is no legal option to just turn the refugee children away... they must be detained somewhere, because they have a right to a hearing and will be sent back, the government made a choice to make the detention center less terrible. Do you get it yet? This is essentially a prison that looks slightly nicer. The situation of homeless children who are citizens is often a lot more complicated, and frequently involves situations of mental illness, drug use, parents who won't get their act together, etc. That doesn't mean you can't have compassion for both. Sheesh. |
