Anyone have Geico car insurance? This seems too good to be true...less than 1/2 price of Nationwide

Anonymous
OP we are with Geico. I started with them back when I first started driving, strayed for a few years with Progressive but they got too expensive so I priced Geico again and they were lower! Even priced Erie. Very high as well in comparison to Geico.

What you're paying is crazy high for what you told us you have!

We have 2 cars. Lexus SUV and a Mini Cooper - Convertible. We are in our late 40s. No accidents or speeding tickets in the past 5 yrs. Our annual premium is about $1100 - ANNUALLY.

We are also long time Geico customers. (15 years) We've had two accidents that weren't our fault, and geico was great. One accident was a military driver driving a rental car for government business -- talk about a beauracratic nightmare. Geico was AMAZING in helping us deal with that bs.

What limits are enough for car insurance? Is 50/100 enough, or should it be more?

They offer a discount for DC Bar members

I had GEICO for about two months before my truck was totaled by a driver charged with a DUI. I thought their customer service was great. They dealt with the other driver's insurance company and eventually rebated my deductible. The only nuisance was that they tried to lowball the value of my truck. I had to do my own research online to show it was worth more than they said. I still did not recover the blue book value, which is what I heard State Farm automatically gives you without any hassle.

OP here, okay, so homeowner's insurance through Geico(underwritten by Liberty Mutual) would be $1701/year (as opposed to $1500/year with Nationwide), but the savings on the auto policy definitely still makes it worth while. .

Does anyone know if you get an additional discount through Geico if you also get life insurance through them?

We have Geico for Auto and had Liberty Mutual (through Geico) for home. The home ins premium seemed high, so I called Geico back and they gave me another option through Traveler's with same coverage for about 30% less. I don't know why they didn't give me that in the first place, but I switched right away and haven't had any complaints since.

We had a similar experience with Geico in that we were with Liberty for a long time, maybe ten years. We bought a new car and when we really looked at our rates, we were shocked at the cost. We were told that while we had made no claims in ten years, we had inquired about a claim to repair a bumper and they jacked our rates up. The quote from Geico was half and we went with them. We told Liberty about the lower rate and they did not care. They would not lower at all.

I can't find the link, but I read an article a few weeks ago, maybe at Dave Ramsey, about auto insurance. Basically the point was that there is no benefit for being a loyal customer. Your rates will increase until you change companies. This is the actual industry business model. They recommended checking your rates every three years or so to stay on top of it.

Has Geico jacked your rates since moving to them?

At one point, Geico's rates varied by the zip code you live in. Not sure if that's still true.

Anyone insured a teen with Geico?

Not a fan of the gekko or pig commercials, though.

Yes, it was fine for a teen girl and through the roof for a teen boy. It also depends how you classify (primary driver vs. occasional driver) and whether the kid has a car. Ours does have a car so the insurance on that one is quite expensive but we don't have him listed as driving our other cars at all.

Anonymous wrote:$6,000 a year sounds really high. Of course, you haven't told us the value of your cars or house or your driving record and claims history.

agreed. we have two vehicles and pay $1700 per year. both are 2011s, one is a toyota and the other a "luxury" vehicle. we use state farm and do have home and umbrella insurance as well as a personal articles policy so we get some discounts there, but I think the biggest discount is a safe driving record.

No accidents or tickets.
2013 prius
2010 honda fit
2006 Ford F350
Home was last appraised for $480K

At Nationwide, we get the following auto insurance discounts:

passive restraint, multi car, farm bureau member, 5 year accident free, home & car, new vehicle

Does $6,000/year definitely seem high? I've been with Nationwide for ages, and have never really shopped around

That seems excessively high. How much do you pay for your homeowner's insurance?

My homeowner's insurance premium before discounts is $3,078, and after discounts (protective device, new home, claim free, long term, Farm Bureau Member), it is $1,500.

Coverage amount is $480,000 for dwelling. Does that seem high too, or about right?

that is crazy high too! my home is valued at $875k and we pay $900/year. plus we have a pool! what are your deductibles? ours are high (at least $1k). that might be part of the difference.

do you live in the DC area? i cant fathom why anyone in this area would drive around with less than 300/500/300 insurance plus an umbrella policy. all it takes is one mistake in this litigous society to bankrupt you. hell i see cars on the road all the time that are worth 80k and that's BEFORE you include the cost of what injuries could happen to someone or other property in an accident.

People calling OP's $6000 per year high, please keep in mind that includes her homeowners insurance as well. Thank you.

Oh damn, that is high then. Sorry, that was clear re-reading the original post but I misunderstood a subsequent post. We have three vehicles, two drivers. A $40,000 2011 American SUV, a $70,000 2013 German sedan, and a $30,000 2013 American sports car. Neither of us have perfect driving records, we had a pretty big claim when a tree fell on one of our prior cars, and we pay $1800 a year with GEICO. We also have two homeowners' policies and an umbrella policy with them, so some of it is due to bundling plus a DC bar discount.
