| Can anyone comment on how an ES newbie skater should proceed if there's still a chance kid could play in HS? TY. |
where do you live? If in Montgomery County - there are ice hockey lessons through the county - then once they get to a certain level - you can join MYHA (Montgomery Youth Hockey Assoc) for their Instructional Program for a year - then move into playing on a House Team. what grade ES? |
| MoCo. Second grader. Thx. |
ok - MoCo 2nd grade - get Cabin John (or Rockville) lessons and then do Instructional. This link will give you the general skill level to enter Instructional and Mites House for MYHA. http://myha.org/files/2014_fall_myha_registration_booklet.pdf |

My kids enjoyed this http://rockvilleice.pointstreaksites.com/view/rockvilleice/home-page/hip
It was better than Cabin John skating lessons, where the lessons where more 'controlled" on how to place your hand and feet as if the skater was going to be a figure skater. This rockville hockey initiation was fun, learning how to skate and fall and get up... plus you get equipment with the lesson. |
| What happened at SFS? i thought they were starting something in the middle school. |
To PP - were your kids in the hockey skating class at Cabin John or figure skating? We had a different experience, but we were in hockey classes. |
| hmm..all this talk about hockey..lol...still on the fence as to whether DS wants to play 2nd yr Bantam next season. He's started to have other interest after playing for 5+ years. |
It was just regular skating classes. I don't remember their being a "hockey" option but we had the option of picking hockey skates or figure skates and we chose hockey. It may have just been 1 bad teacher. We laughed when we got the "report card"... there was some comment "bad hand placement" recommendation "repeat class". |
Clarification - @ Rockville, before you took HIP 1 - hockey initiation class, you first had to do basic skating 1 & 2, where you could use either hockey or figure skates, figure skates were the preference for beginners since they're way easier to learn to skate on. About two or three years ago, Rockville added a beginner class more geared towards kids who wanted to follow the hockey path. CJ main focus use to be figure skating for beginner but recently started adding hockey beginner classes.......I don't believe the have a formal program like Rockville's HIP1 & 2. Be prepared to open your wallets:mrgreeb: |
| CJ has had hockey classes for many years -as our child started them 6 yrs ago and they weren't 'new' then. He started young (3) with parent-tot skating and then had maybe 2 general skating classes without a parent, then took parent-tot hockey and then hockey classes that were called Mighty Mites 1 thru Mighty Mites 5 - but they changed the name to something different now. We didn't start with the intention of hockey - we just like to skate in our family - but we migrated there eventually. |

Bumping thread up to see if OP or others wanted to update after 2 years how things worked out or if others would like to offer current experiences. Very curious what level players make the private school teams. Interested in middle, JV and V experiences if people willing to share.
Heard rumor that majority of kids that make Landon middle school are tier 1 or AA players. True? Same at Mater Dei? STA? Also heard that at these schools due to red shirting that a 6th grader has very low chance of making team even if playing AA club level. True? |
