Ice Hockey in Private schools

Anonymous
I'm curious for kids that are playing ice hockey on their high school private teams, what level are they playing outside of school? Team Maryaland? Travel AAA, AA, B? I am sure it depends on the school - as I know Landon has had some very strong players in their program. So please list school along with range in the level of players on the team.

More background for context....We will be applying to middle school at privates that go through 12 for either Fall 15 or Fall 16 admission. Our son is decent at hockey, but not a superstar. We have no idea what he'd like to do in the future, but if he'd like to play HS hockey in the future, I'd like to have a sense of whether that is even possible or not.

Note that I am also fully aware that our child is in the huge bubble of kids coming up through the ranks as a result of Ovi-effect. So what happens on HS teams currently may change as this cohort ages. I suspect that there is likely to be a higher standard by the time he gets to high school by the sheer fact that there are more kids choosing hockey and that is likely to lead to more competition and more high quality players out there.

Club teams are more important than High School, unless you are playing just for "fun" (BTW this is the *only* reason to play hockey -- chances of making D1 College teams are close to zero due to influx of top Canadian players who wish to go to school in the US)

Yup..better off doing fencing if ya want a ticket to college. Try telling that to the zillions of parents at myha, ashburn, laurel etc. lol. been there done that..In HS around here they either play JV or V and if there's only a V team, u kid won't get much playing time is they're not travel calibre. It's a club sport in most HS with the Catholics and independents skating everyday, cost bout $1500 or so...

Google making junior hockey....

OP here - just to clarify - our son will ONLY be "playing for fun" - there is NO WAY he would ever make a college team. But that doesn't mean he might not be interested in playing for his high school team "if he could make it". So my question is really what kind of "talent" end up playing on the high school privates in the area (including club).

I know that if you are a real talent, you are better off going up to Prep schools in NE or going off to play junior hockey in another city/country. That's not what I am asking.

In fact - I am asking "who is left behind" to play in the high schools. Something more akin to this....if your kid plays Travel AA or Travel B for MYHA, Laurel, Ashburn etc is there no hope for high school team (even club team)...or are some of those kids still able to make a team.

The best private schools in the area for area for high school hockey nowadays are Landon and Gonzaga. I think Gonzaga is in a league of their own for this area. They are very elite.

If your kids play travel, he will definetly make the HS team. In the spring of either 7 or 8 grade, you could approach the HS your son has an interest in, and they may allow him to skate out with them for Spring league. Go to the school website and see if they offer hackey camps in the summer.....

Must give it to Gonzaga, they're true gentlemen at the game, unlike that other team u mention. One game two years ago, they need an extra score sheet just to record the # of penalites..lol..nasty players....

If you are going to link to something, you might want to actually link to what you are talking about.

Looking at penalty minutes from the league 2 years ago, see lots of Dematha penalty minutes. I see 2 landon players.

This is not answering the question - which is - for the kids on those two teams - what level of "travel hockey" were they playing? Elite, like Team Maryland and AAA? Or do the teams include other players from lower levels - like AA and B?

There is a significant range, even at the "top" programs in this area. A kid playing travel hockey at the AA or B level who is reasonably strong within that context should make the team at pretty much any school and ice time will depend upon how strong the school is. There are kids who have only played rec league hockey on HS teams in this area. As a PP or maybe the OP noted, really ambitious players often go to boarding school or if they start in HS hockey here they leave to play junior hockey out West for a couple of years before college.

Even at the B Travel level?

Yes, right now the spring league is in full swing at Rockville. Take a look in - there you will see a mix bag of levels. However I don't think Go'ga or Landon is playing in the spring league, not sure, but call the front desk at the ice rink, and ask for a list of HS teams playing for Spring.... Some of the best players might be missing due to LAX, Crew, etc..but still should give u an idea...HTH
