Has Zara always had such ugly clothing?

Anonymous
Yes, birks and other trends in this earthy hippy style are currently in. It doesn't mean, however, that people should be wearing them - -- especially when in 90% of cases they are objectively unattractive.

(and the previous sentence should not be read to give some of the drab moms on this site carte blanche to wear birks with their 15 year old jeans and an old navy sweatshirt and deem themselves "trendy". Birks are only meant to be worn in a Coachella breezy kind of way).

But to OP's original question, yes, zara and pretty much every "fashion forward" store right now is pumping out seriously ugly clothes. Boxy, drab colors, asexual, untailored and generally wholly unflattering. This has been going on for about 5 years. I will sometimes go into a store like that with the intention to "submit" to the trend and insistent that I'm going to buy something. And then I try stuff on and I looks so hideous that I can't bring myself to do it. Unfortunately, the alternative is to shop at stores that are decidedly unfashion forward because they are specifically trying to cater towards women who are stuck in a timeloop and refusing to move forward with fashion. Stores like, say, the limited, are essentially churning out only slightly updated clothes from 2004.

Young-ish, fashion-forward women in many other cities do wear them with some frequency - Birks are a bit more of a casual, West-coast style, but yes, they are definitely in/featured in all of the style blogs/mags/etc. Check out Gretchen's Closet for a "real" 40-something year old woman wearing many of these trends.

Seriously. How do people not know this. Fashion illiterate...

I've gotten some cool stuff at Zara, but I agree I don't like the bland clothes in the pictures you provided.

My 17 and 20 female teens have recently discovered Zara and love it! Both are tall and slim and have an "edge" to their fashion choices. Both have also moved away from F21 as their go-to place. I've recently introduced them to Intermix (sale items ONLY), and they are like kids in candy store.

As a late 40 something, I can still find a few nice pieces for myself. The boxy look fits me since I have no boobs, hips, or butt, so I actually like items that "hang" off my shoulders and don't show that I actually have the body of a prepub 12 yo girl. LOL

The first two look fine to me, but I agree the third looks like a hospital gown. It might be attractive on a 4'10" rail thin Japanese woman.

no

Birks are not in.

I don't know if Birks are "in" but they are very popular right now! I have two pairs and I always see other women wearing the birk thong sandals too

Zara quality is just fucking horrendous. My Forever 21 basic staple pieces have outlasted everything I own from Zara (not that I have a ton of either).

I actually love Zara - and *like* the first two looks - but certainly wouldn't consider myself particularly trendy. (Well, at least I know birks/flatforms are in ... but I wouldn't wear them.)

That said, the quality is crappy - but it still outlasts my Banana Republic and much of my J Crew. So even that is relative.

Birkenstocks are in. So are dresses that are cut a little off the grid.

I asked a pal who works in theatre in NYC if Birks were the style.

She was speechless.

Yes, they are http://www.whowhatwear.com/best-spring-sandals-colorful-nude-embellished-studded-tribal-pink-womens-shoes-2014/slide4

A pal in NYC theatre? You realize they don't earn enough to be fashionable, right? They may be stylish, but I have more than one actress/singer friend, and they are determinedly individualistic. So. Yes.

This. I wouldn't shop there for anything. If youre shopping there you have like 0 sense. I'm nowhere close to my 40's and I know better.

Where do you shop, oh Wise One?

Boy are you ladies out of sync. Yes, those dresses are ugly, but ZARA is where it's at. I wear things from Zara that are amazing and get tons of compliments.

You have to have a good eye. I have some shoes from Zara that look exactly like the Chanel ones.

I saw a women in clogs yesterday and they were too fly.

Poor DC. I see you everyday and am horrified. I'm sure you are the same ladies I see on the street. No fashion sense whatsoever.

I don't believe you have a fashion sense. Anyone with one would know how great Zara is. Not all the time. Sometime they miss, but sometimes they are spot on. You have to go online. I can mix Zara with Max Mara and will make it look like the entire outfit was $10k.

You guys know this is from last year, right?
