Yes, birks and other trends in this earthy hippy style are currently in. It doesn't mean, however, that people should be wearing them - -- especially when in 90% of cases they are objectively unattractive. (and the previous sentence should not be read to give some of the drab moms on this site carte blanche to wear birks with their 15 year old jeans and an old navy sweatshirt and deem themselves "trendy". Birks are only meant to be worn in a Coachella breezy kind of way). But to OP's original question, yes, zara and pretty much every "fashion forward" store right now is pumping out seriously ugly clothes. Boxy, drab colors, asexual, untailored and generally wholly unflattering. This has been going on for about 5 years. I will sometimes go into a store like that with the intention to "submit" to the trend and insistent that I'm going to buy something. And then I try stuff on and I looks so hideous that I can't bring myself to do it. Unfortunately, the alternative is to shop at stores that are decidedly unfashion forward because they are specifically trying to cater towards women who are stuck in a timeloop and refusing to move forward with fashion. Stores like, say, the limited, are essentially churning out only slightly updated clothes from 2004.
