Hematometra after ablation anyone?

Anonymous
In my early 40s. Estrogen levels normal. Had out of control bleeding 2009-10. In 2011, had Novasure. Worked great until late 2015. Non-stop cramping and bloody discharge. I'm crushed.

Wow! I feel compelled to reply to this post even though it's old. I had a NovaSure ablation procedure done 1/15/2016 and felt great that evening. The normal discharge they describe for about 2 1/2 weeks and then nothing. I was on the high road to living a more simple life after having bleeding for months without stopping.

I didn't have a cycle, spotting, discharge or anything. Fast forward to 3/21/2016 - roughly 9 weeks after surgery. I am getting the worst cramps ever - especially after urinating. I passed it off as a UTI, began to drown myself in cranberry juice and blew it off since my symptoms got better for about a day or so.

Then on Saturday 4/1/2016 I had cramps so bad that I looked up my local Urgent Care facility and went to the them the next morning as soon as they opened. They took a urine sample, no UTI and not pregnant. They gave me 3 Rx's for pain and a referral for an ultrasound and asked me to follow up with my GYN that Monday. I went home, then got my nails done, had lunch with a friend and returned home.

While watching a movie with my husband that evening I began to cramp and took a Motrin 800. 2 hours later no relief. As a matter of fact, the pain got worse. I went to try to lay down in the hopes that would relieve the pain, no dice. It continued to get worse. I got dressed and my husband took me to the ER. While there I was given an IV and a dose of Morphine. the Morphine did nothing for the pain! All it did was make me feel relaxed/high.

I continued to complain and they gave me another dose of Morphine - again, no relief from the pain! I know this has to be completely unbelievable for you all to read, but let me tell you, it's unbelievable to me and i went through it. I got an ultrasound which I was told looked "normal". and I again requested more pain meds. This time they gave me a pain med cocktail of Torodol and something else that I cannot remember. This also relaxed me and did barely help with pain. I was so tired and sleepy, and by this time, midnight was approaching. I was told that I couldn't go to sleep because I wasnt breathing deep enough and my oxygen levels were dropping, so they began to give me oxygen and had my husband wake me every 5 minutes to remind me to breathe.

My GYN was finally called in and told what was going on. He did a vaginal exam and told me to put up my index finger when it hurt where he touched. As soon as he touched my cervix I was in the worst pain ever and I wanted to jump out of that bed! I requested a 4th dose of pain meds after that and I finally began to get a small bit of pain relief, but not without the side effect of severe nausea. I was set for surgery at 2:30am to drain everything from my uterus along with a D&C.

Honestly, I talked to my Dr prior to having NovaSure and the things that could go wrong, and I knew that tissue could be missed or grow back, however, i didn't know it could get trapped and cause excruciating and debilitating pain. I have an appointment with my GYN in 2 weeks to follow up from surgery.

At this point I am no longer fighting the idea of a hysterectomy. There is no way in hell that I would ever want to go through what I just went through again, just for the sake of a womb I will never again use. I don't blame my GYN for what happened. It wasn't his fault the procedure didn't work for me. Things happen. I'm just onto the next step.

I posted here to tell what happened to me and maybe help someone else who could be going through the same thing I went through but is blowing off the symptoms like I did. If you are having those severe cramps and little/no period, PLEASE see your GYN right away! Don't put it off.

Hi

I had cautery of cervical ectropion, myosure resection of endometrial polyps and biopsies 6 days ago. Two days ago after seeing a lovely flat tummy area again my abdomen suddenly grew massively so now I look 5-6 mths pregnant. After feeling good I feel like I have labour pains on and off and nausea/dizziness and nasty pain that comes and goesinny lower abdomen. I have a period now with bead size small black clots. Has anyone experienced this? The GP didn't do anything as he said my tummy is soft. I'm wondering if something has been left blocked or this is 'normal'? I had asked the gynaecologist for a hysterectomy as I have 3 children but he wanted to fit a mirena coil which I refused as I thought this would cause even more problems!

Sorry to reopen this thread but I am currently "in Labor". It's been 3 weeks since my Novasure and I have never felt worse. I've been taking oxy and Motrin for a week now. Nothing helps. I did not know about this side effect! I'm now begging for a hysterectomy! Are there any updated cures for this?

Hello,
I am almost 3 years post Novasure. The first 2 years went very well, stopped the bleeding. This past year has been a living hell! I've had 3 children and never have I experienced the horrible "labor pains", cold sweats from pain, nauseated that I do every month as a result from having Novasure. I called my doctor's office, only to get a return phone call telling me to "take ibuprofen". Duh! I don't think morphine would help the pain. I recently had an ultrasound, which showed the hematometra. I will see my doctor next week. I am certain I will ultimately have to get a hysterectomy. I Think Novasure should come with better warnings of the complications with this procedure. I was told this was the answer that I've beeen looking for! Safe and effective! Every month I stay in bed with a heating pad for at least two days, literally moaning in pain. Having a hysterectomy will cost me weeks of not working. If I could go back I would definitely not have had this procedure done.Novasure should be held accountable for the pain it has inflicted on so many women.

I am a 27 year old mother of 2. I went in to get fixed and ended up wanting to back out. But couldn't because I had cervical cancer. Also had heavy bleeding and cramps. I had endometriosis. Ablation was my option. Was told like 3% of females have a failed ablation and could have hematometra. That is a lie! I even did my research and couldn't find anything about it. This was in May of 2016. I am fine for about two months after my surgery, I had to get fixed and a ablation, I was having cramping and was told it was normal. It kept getting worse and worse. I finally went to the er, they treated me like a drug addict and sent me on my way. The next day I demanded to my obgyn to figure it out. I have blood trapped in my uterus and the wall went into my muscle. I am now ,when I have cramping witch is all the time, on 7,2 hydrocodone, and tramadol because it's worse then labor. I'm not joking. And that only took the edge off on the bad ones. I am getting a hysterectomy tomorrow. Do not get an ablation it was the worst thing I ever done.

I had Novasure in 2010, after my 4th pregnancy ended in 2 month hospital stay due to placenta previa and hemorrhaging at any time. Since my last son's birth in 2001, I was anemic due to heavy bleeding, and ablation seemed the answer. I have not had any bleeding, but cramps that I never had before. Wine helped or ibuprofen, but 2015 got severe, with multiple doses of ibuprofen that didn't work. One month went to urgent care, next month to ER. Sonograms, colonoscopy, X-ray-everything "normal". Progesterone for a year helped, then I stopped. In 3 months, severe pain started again, always the same place. On progesterone again, but bad again after 3 months. Headed to the Center for Menstrual Disorders in Rochester, NY in January. 7 hour drive, but may be worth it to see Dr M Wortman. He emailed me back in a day and called me and we discussed my problems and his solutions. I am finally hopeful! A

I had an ablation in July 2016. First 3 months (Aug, Sep, Oct) I had no pain and a mild period for just one day each month.
Nov 2016, no period but severe, excrutiating labor type pain. It was accompanied by vomiting and feeling faint. I went to ER they assumed it was intestinal and gave me antibiotics and pain meds. 4 days later I still felt pressure but no pain.
Dec 2016 - the whole thing repeated. I told pcm that pain was happening during what would have been my menstrual cycle. She ruled that a coincidence and was convinced it was a GI issue. 4 more days of antibiotics and pain decreased. Jan 1st 2017 - third month in a row that debilitating pain started on my cycle date. This time I avoided the pcp and went straight to the ob/gyn.
She said scar tissue has formed over my cervix opening. Blood is pooling in my uterus with no place to go due to the scar tissue. The uterus is contracting to try and release the blood. So the labor type pains that Im feeling really are contractions, just no baby to push out. She said there is no way to re-open the cervix so I will be having a hysterectomy.

Please let us know how it goes in Rochester with Dr. Wortman. I am considering going to him too.
Best of luck to you!

I returned from Rochester, NY last night after having ultrasound guided hysteroscopic endomyometrial resection for a failed ablation. Dr. Wortman and his staff were amazing. My husband drove up Monday, saw them Tuesday am and afternoon, had surgery Wednesday am, and follow-up Thursday am. Stayed in hotel which was great-no cooking or cleaning, and could check in with my kids at home when able. So far, very little pain throughout, but since previous pain was so bad, anything else would be minor. Check out the Center for Menstrual Disorders and Reproductive Choice online or on Facebook. It was reassuring watching the surgery video Thursday confirming the expected source of pain no one else knew what to look for. Dr. Wortman called me today, and he responded to my initial email quickly. We expected snow daily, but only one bad weather day; Rochester averages 100 inches of snow a year. A patient from Cleveland had surgery the day before me. Things look good. Read the info Dr. Wortman has and see if it sounds like you. Success rate is high for me, only time will tell.

I see a few people posting about Dr. Wortman's procedure for failed ablation. Did you get it done?
I am scheduled to go in, but I am hoping to find some positive feed back. I had my ablation in 2010. I have been bleeding since November, with little to no days off! My cramping is off the charts.
I would love to hear from you, if you went through with the procedure!

I posted in January after procedures, 3 days with Dr. Wortman. Everything still great. I had been trying everything to relieve the pain. My tolerance level must have been really high, because absolutely no pain at all. They did give me relaxers and pain meds, but never felt pain. I highly recommend speaking with him. The afternoon of the surgery, after a nap, we drove to Lake Ontario and walked around all the frozen beaches a little. Definitely worth the trip! It was also covered by my insurance.

Hi everyone, wondering whether the OP ended up having the hysterectomy? I had Novasure in August 2016 and just these last couple of months I've started to have cramping and my hips ache at night and the pain seems to radiate into my legs, bloating & a feeling of pressure all the time. The pain isn't extreme (yet) but Iv had ultrasounds which show trapped fluid accumulating in my uterus and growing in volume. I too wish I'd researched all this stuff better but instead had blind faith in my gyno.
I have an appointment to go back and see my gyno next week to discuss my options and although I'm terrified of hysterectomy I'm also not very keen on having the fluid drained incase it returns and I have to do it again.
I'm over the whole drama.

I had an ablation in September 2014. In April 2016 I started experiencing pain in my lower left hand side with spotting and bleeding every month or so. It has been gradually getting more painful.

The doctors seemed to have a difficult time determining what the problem was. Originally they thought it was diverticulitis, then fibroids/cysts, etc. I had an ultrasound which didn't show anything, and just had an MRI last week and have been now diagnosed with hematometra/hematosalpinx. I am scheduled for a hysterectomy scheduled for September 29th.

I had two C-sections prior to the ablation. Apparently C-sections and ablations can cause hematometra. I do not recall my Gyno telling me about this possibility before I had the ablation.

I am quite looking forward to the hysterectomy at this point, as I have been experiencing more and more pain each month.

Good luck all!
