Dealing with elderly parents? How much to you give up?

I think how much you want to get involved with your elderly parents' care really depends on your relationship. I know some families are very close and they are there to help each other out as much as they can, but mine isn't. We live rather close to my parents and there were times I definitely needed help after surgeries etc., and they were nowhere to be found. It has always been a one way street with my parents. I can never give them enough and they can never leave me stranded enough. Once I had kids, I realized that my main focus is on my immediate family. I will be there to help my parents if they asked, but I feel really no obligation since they've rarely been there for me.
