Anyone know how many days MCPS schools clsoed this year?

Oh please with your sob story and clueless parents. You work 6-7hrs a day in the school with 2-3 periods off for planning and/or lunch. You are a salary employee so like 90% of other salary employees you end up working 9-10hr days. Guess what? I don't get my summers, Spring/winter break and 8 holidays off either. I get 1wk of vacation. I sure hope my kids don't have you as a teacher.

That is fine, I am an amazing teacher and both you and your kids would be lucky to have me! Just to clea up though: High school teachers have 2-3 periods off for planning and/or lunch. As they should since the amount of paperwork they have to do is significant. HOWEVER, elementary school teachers get 4 and 35 minutes a week for planning (if their administrator adhears to the contract, not all do). No, that does not include our 30 minutes for lunch. The point is, teachers work incredibly hard for you and your kids. A little respect for the profession would be appropriate...

You don't sound like an amazing teacher. And you might check that contract again -- MD law requires 180 days of instruction and I assume they intend to have teachers there for all 180, although perhaps a few days can be self-taught.

The state has mandated 180 of instruction, teachers are allowed to take personal/sick leave though. I always find it amusing how many people like to point out our days off but not a single one would actually want to be a teacher. Funny

Nope, I am a nurse. I get the same pay as you, work year round, holidays and weekends and nights. I deal with vomit, urine, feces, blood, know-it all-doctors and overwhelmed families on a daily basis. I have gotten kicked in the chest and knocked unconscious so a drug addict could leave with his IV intact. I have had psych patients bite and spit on me. One slip up in medication or an IV and I could kill someone. A teacher would be a walk in the park. Don't hold your job so high and mighty.

For real. And what about firemen, police officers, men in the armed forces. There are other jobs out there that have the same pay and are just as hard or harder than a teacher. I don't think your job is easy but you work 8-10hrs a day like every other person I know on salary. MCPS pays pretty well and sorry but you do get a lot of time off and can make a supplemental income in the summer tutoring or doing camps. There should not be a case of burn-out but it seems like every teacher seems burned out and is constantly complaining instead of enjoying teaching anymore. And it trickles down to the kids.
