Have to agree that union grocery stores are worse than non-union ones. Customer service is the worst. Have you ever been to the Sangamore Rd. Safeway? Perfect example of this. Long lines, refusal to open up additional cashiers to accommodate customers, surly cashiers, and on and on.

The union has nothing to do with opening up check stand lanes, managers put less workers on because the company gives them no hours to run the front end, hours are distributed to other departments who already have a lot of workload burden then managers are supposed to come and open check stands when the cashier calls for backup but then most managers will not do it. Also service is directly related to the store manager, when the employees are treated like crap by management the moral goes in the toilet. If stores were not unionized you would ultimately be paying more because it would be just like wal mart where employees cannot support their families, need low income housing and federal benefits. Being unionized does not mean you cannot be fired it means they have to have a real reason to fire you other than the manager doesn't like you.

I get excellent service at the tysons walmart and the produce is fresh.

It doesn't change the fact that fewer than something like 30% of their staff isn't paid a living wage. Hope you enjoy paying high taxes, because someone has to support the businesses that can't be bothered to pay real money.

If we're sharing regional hopes and dreams, I wish Lund Food Holdings would buy Safeway. If my local Safeway converted to a Byerly's, I would be beyond giddy.

Except for Ms. Crystal

Ms. Crystal is terrific! So nice and goes the extra mile (opened up lanes for me when I had a baby, asked others to do the same). But I also think that Sangamore Rd is a much better than average Safeway. Can't stand Safeway in general.

And don't forget Robert! He's really lovely and good at his job too. While there are some less good cashiers, I agree that the Sangamore Safeway is pretty good overall, though you definitely don't want to be there Sunday late afternoon.

Maybe all the Safeways would turn into Food Lions. The one in Cascades is super clean and the prices are so low.

Like Wegmans?

Oh nevermind.

This is the attitude that causes bad service

No, the fact they have to work multiple jobs, are exhausted and often live in crappy apartments is the reason the customer service is so bad. They may get good (not great) benefits, but anyone who has started working in a union shop supermarket in the past 10 years or so is making a very low wage

Kroger is gross. I live in an area (lived in DC area for 15 years) that has Kroger and all of them are nasty. Poor lighting, poor selection, and a layer of grime. Yuck.

I agree that it is poorly managed and the lines are always ridiculously long, but the cashiers are actually very friendly.

Oh please. Here in Cincinnati our stores are gorgeous, huge and have amazing selection. And their Marketplace model will no doubt spread throughout their territory.

Oh, and this is for the asshole who suggested I knew nothing about business for suggesting that Kroger buy them. Suck it, jerk.

Agree, it just shows how awful grocery stores are in this area that people wish for Kroger...where I'm from Kroger is the bottom rung grocery store.

Sorry, that was meant to be a statement, not a question.
