| Why no middle school in Ward 4? |
+1. What some PPs don't seem to recognize is that Ward 3 residents are actively being discriminated against by the combination of a) essentially no PS3 in their schools, b) the proximity preference in favor of other Wards (where PS3 slots are) that make it very difficult if not impossible for Ward 3 kids to access public PS3. It is clear that Ward 3 kids DOES NOT have the same access/ opportunities to PS3 as other Wards. Now, this is obviously not the end of the world, but it is a reality. |
Boo freaking waaaah. Kids in Wards 1, 4, & 5 have no access to stand alone middle schools. And plenty of kids in Wards 1, 4, and 5 *do* commute all over the city for better educational opportunities. |
Ok I have an idea then. You can have my spot at Lasalle Backus for PS3. I'll pay for a year of preschool as long as I can have your Pk4 spot and beyond at Janney. Sound fair? |
| As a ward 3 parent, sure, PS3 would be nice, but I do get why it is not a priority for dcps. Ward 3 should prioritize fixing overcrowding before adding on a new grade, plain and simple. |
Does this mean that you would support the building of new public housing projects in Ward 3 so that the amount of such housing there is comparable to the rest of the city? |
| OP's audacity is astounding. If you don't like your "access" then move to a cheaper part of town. I couldn't say such a thing to the majority of residents in Ward 7 or 8 with a straight face. You, however, have a financial option. |
You are exactly the type of resident this corrupt government loves, guilty with deep pockets. Wake up. Daycare costs for a 3 year old in Ward 3 is $20,000/year. You are comfortable paying this just because you can afford to, while EVERY other Ward does not have to? Wow. |
I think you AND OP are missing the point. PK3 is a lottery for everyone. No one is guaranteed a spot so there is no discrimination. Furthermore many Ward 3 parents would shudder at the thought of sending their kids to the schools we have in wards 4-8. It sounds like what OP wants is to have the option for pk3 at their top WOTP school. Isn't it enough that you get the top schools for the other 14 years? |
We're not Ward 3 residents but pay $17k/year at a private preschool because we lost out on all our lottery picks for PS3. It may surprise you to learn that there is more supply than demand at that level--it's just not convenient for you. Kwitcherbitchin. |
I'd love to hear whether OP would take this trade. Let me guess... |
| I'm crying my eyes out for ward 3 parents. You can take my PK3 spot at my local school in ward 1, which has 30% proficiency for both math and reading. |
|
Ward 3 parent that is not rich and spent a lot of money on daycare and preschool here. I think OP is ridiculous. DC does more than most cities in the area of early childhood education. This is an area where the city is serving the families that need it most well. I do not want more kids at our ES, we cannot afford the space. I would support cutting back the pre-k classrooms we have. Yes, childcare and preschool are expensive. If you did not know this before having kids then you were not paying attention.
Feel free to send your children to one of the DCPS or charter schools that does have space. It is a freaking gift to you that we have prk3 in DC because of the high needs of areas outside ward 3. |
1. Daycare =/= preschool. They're not the same. Therefore ... 2. Top private preschools that we tend to frequent in our neck of the woods don't cost $20k. 3. I'm not feeling guilty about squat. I am, as you say, comfortable. So are most of my neighbors. Do you even live in ward 3? Are you single or low-income? |
|
1. A top daycare uses DCPS curriculum, therefore = PS3
2. Tuition/fees/fundraising at top Ward 3 daycare = $20k 3. I live in Ward 3. We and our neighbors are pushing for ps3 at our ES. Equality in education is a 2 way street. Can't ask Ward 3 parents to give up rights to their neighborhood MS and HS without anttempting to mitigate some of the pain. |
