Why no PS3 or Summer School Options in Ward 3?

Anonymous
Contrary to what some believe not all Ward 3 families are wealthy. In fact, many Ward 3 DCPS families are living paycheck to paycheck (shocking, I know). Why does DC not offer PS3 or summer school options in Ward 3? It always seems like DC takes, takes, takes from Ward 3, but we get little in return. Frustrating.

It's not enough of you all that would attend. Additionally, your schools are too capacity and there is no space.

DC does offer Summer camps for PS3 kids. Chevy Chase, Macomb and Lafayette all over little explorers camp which is for 3-5.

I think people would attend! I know I would have tried for a spot.

Me too!

No space for PS3 schools in WotP schools. It's not a required grade, so better to dedicate sufficient classroom space to required grades than to cram them into classes of 30. DPR camps WotP are great and ridiculously cheap.

the lion's share of the residential tax base lives in Ward 3 on a per capita basis. We do however get services.

So apply to a charter or an OOB school. PS3 is an optional year of schooling.

True, but then the city should give vouchers or tax reduction or something to compensate those excluded from what has become a universal program. It sounds a bit funny to say, the city is investing is pre-school for all...except for Ward 3 kids, since their parents are supposed to be filthy rich. Perhaps we don't have the right to clean water, either?

Most Ward 5 parents are applying OOB or charter too so you are in the same boat. Except that you have a guarantee good spot come kindergarten. So the lottery is much higher stakes for us. And we are competing with you for PS3 spots!

Entitled much?

You're not excluded from anything, lady. What about all the people in Ward 7 and 8 who have barely a school that produces students at 50% proficiency. What about their vouchers or tax reduction because their neighborhood schools are failing them?

You CHOSE to live where you did; maybe if you lived elsewhere you'd have more paycheck to do with what you pleased at the end of the month. You are CHOOSING to send your child to PS3, just like every other person in the city who lives paycheck to paycheck. Get a grip and exercise your options. At least in DC you have them when your child is 3 and 4; anywhere else in the DMV-area you don't until K.

isn't ps3 former Head Start? It wasn't in Ward 3.

Yes, but Head Start was (is) a means tested program aimed at low-SES families. Once you make it a general entitlement regardless of income it becomes a bit questionable to include some Wards and exclude others.
