Folks, when I reread pp's statement I realized that he/she is talking about 60 years later, not 60 years ago with Edmund Hillary. I assume pp is talking about someone besides Norgay.

I started hiking when I moved to an area where there was a lot of hiking opportunities and friends to go with. I'm hoping to have the money to be able to ski or snowboard at some point...

But I don't think its just a white person thing. Some people do, some people don't.

Ha! My black boyfriend is WAY more outdoorsy than me. We're talking "let's go backpacking for a week and forage our own food" kind of stuff. I'm more a "car camping with shower facilities available" kind of girl. His idea of fun at the beach is kite-boarding, mine is sitting on my ass with a beer and trashy book. I'm white.

I would totally attempt to climb it if such an opportunity arose. This stuff is just so fascinating!!

Anyway, I've always loved the outdoorsy stuff since I was a kid, but haven't done much of it until recently when I met the right friends. I've only been on a few hikes, but I'm going on plenty more in the upcoming month and following year... including real camping (non of that heated cabin stuff like when I go with my church) and spelunking!! I wish I could afford (both financial-wise and time-wise) to do other awesome stuff like snowboarding, white water rafting, kayaking, scuba diving, sky diving, jumping 30 feet into an underground lake, etc. All in due time I suppose.

The OP is correct. I hike, bike, ski, and white water raft. I always notice that I'm mainly surrounded by other white people when doing these activities.

However I also run marathons. Again I'm surrounded by whites, but it's always the blacks who take home first place. Always.

I actually understand where you are coming from op. My husband is black and there are so many things he never did before he met me. His family is great but they don't do stuff like that. He had never been camping, fishing, trick or treating, Easter egg hunting, horse back riding, hiking, rarely went to the beach, etc etc.

Glad to say that he's done all of those things now(yes I set up an Easter egg hunt for my then 23 year old boyfriend) plus more adventurous things like parasailing, sky diving, and zip lining!

I think it's sad how few blacks I see at National Parks. I see every other race, but blacks. Everyone should be seeing these wonders!
