I believe the first black person to mount Everest did it almost 60 years after sir Edmund Hillary.

this doesn't tell me that black people aren't adventurous, it tells me that they have better self-preservation skillz than those crazy whities!

I envy that sometimes. I wish that my family/friends were more like that.

When I browse through my white friends' (I have very few such friends and we seldom see each other anymore) facebook profiles, I often see pictures of them rock climbing, fishing, etc.

What I wouldn't give to get my own family members (or at least my black friends) to be more like that.
I know how you feel, OP, but I'm white. When I was growing up, I really wanted to go hiking and backpacking but my family was not into it. These were the pre-internet days so maybe it would have been different today but it felt like the only way I could do this was if my family was already involved in it. I should also add this was the 60s and 70s so I learned to knit and sew in Girl Scouts, I didn't get to go hiking or camping!

Anyway, this all is to say, that I know this is more of a white thing than a black thing but just because you don't know anyone who does this stuff it doesn't mean you can't get more involved. There are a number of groups in the DC area that run trips of one sort or another. You might look into http://www.washingtonwomenoutdoors.org/.

Okay, I just reread your post and you're saying that you wish your friends and family were like that. So maybe you're already doing that kind of stuff on your own? If so, you don't need my encouragement to get going on your own. You need to talk your friends and family into giving it a try. Why don't you invite a friend to go do a day hike with you or to try a rock climbing class? You might be able to introduce your friends and family to these things! Good luck!

I agree with OP.

Every black guy that I've dated has refused to do outdoorsy type things such as hiking, biking, fishing, rock climbing, sailing, surfing, etc.

It's a real bummer that I have to go outside of my race to find someone that I can do fun activities with.

This is why you can't get a black woman to swim in the ocean to save your life. It's because the sea salt will mess up her hair.

I am white, but born and raised in Europe and consequently not inclined to risk life and limb in pursuit of a short-lived adrenaline rush. Hiking, biking, kayaking - ok, but rock climbing, bungee jumping and similar needlessly risky activities I leave to the people who, I assume, don't have any real challenges in their lives.

Black person here and I love indoor rock climbing! PP indoor rock climbing is much safer. They strap you in with a harness and you climb up the wall with pegs as opposed the the side of a mountain

Sea salt is not beneficial for all hair types.
