Would you fly to Europe at 33 weeks pregnant for a family event?

I might. A lot depends on your health and comfort zone.

But if you don't want to go then don't - being pregnant (especially that late in the game) is a get out of jail free card. If you really need to get your dr. to say she's uncomfortable with it.

If you'll be stressed about it then you shouldn't do it.

Congrats on the baby!

Not a chance. For lots of reasons, but the first thing I thought of was how uncomfortable I was on a 7 hour car ride at 29 weeks. I would have been one miserable b*tch flying anywhere at 33 weeks.

Skip it and let them know you'll come visit with the baby when its safe and you are ready for everyone to travel.

I find this hard to believe - that you personally know multiple people with healthy pregnancies who have gone into labor at 33 weeks while their husbands are a flight away. That scenario really doesn't happen all that often.

PP here. That's a fair statement but I do personally know two women that this has happened to. Both women's waters broke early. To be fair, I don't know the exact number of weeks for either woman but one was two months early and the other was about a month and a half early, so in the same ballpark. One husband made it back in time (barely), the other didn't. I know another woman who went into labor (with her husband there) at 35 weeks. I know it doesn't happen all that often, but it does happen.

PS: All the babies arriving early are fine - don't worry OP and any other pregnant ladies on this thread!

I'm not familiar with how important Bar Mitzvahs are in Jewish culture but in your circumstances, it seems surprising that anyone (especially family) would be pressuring you and your DH to fly abroad. It just doesn't seem worth your stress, let alone any negative consequences.

Just give the kid the money you and your DH would've spent traveling to London. With how happy he would be, I think you'd keep the family peace.

Good luck on your new addition!!

I would not go but would be fine with DH going.

I don't think the airline would let you board the plane. I few to Miami at 32 weeks and needed a doctor's note.

If you are getting pressure to go, it can be annoying or make you feel bad, but another way to look at it (especially if this is your first child) is that it's good practice for all the other times well-meaning people will likely have strong (but equally unappealing) opinions about what you should do with your kid. It's okay to say what you want and need - go with your gut.

I flew to Zurich for a vacation at 33 weeks (tagged along on dh's work trip). It was awesome. Flight was not a problem.

I wouldn't go. I (suddenly) had to go out of work on medical leave around 35/36 weeks do to rising blood pressure. Doc just thought that I needed to take it easy for the last month or so and I listened to her. Even so, my son was delivered via emergency c-section at 38 weeks do to fetal heart rate decels discovered during a routine OB/Gyn appt.

With my second pregnancy I had no such issues. But my doctor started early weekly fetal monitoring and then twice weekly fetal monitoring as my due date approached just to be on the safe side.

I guess with my history, no way would I plan to be out of town and away from my doctor during the 3rd trimester.

OP, you should trust your gut on this one. Sounds like you don't want to go. So don't. The whole board agrees with you.

I would in your shoes let DH go (and in fact ask him to avoid family melt down) but only if there were no concerns about the pregnancy.

Different airlines have different cutoffs about dates, but it's rather hard for them to enforce. I would talk to my OB, tell them you feel uncomfortable. Any sane OB will tell you what DCUM is telling you -- then don't go. Then you can tell SIL that you are sorry but OB advises you not to go and you won't be lying.

Good luck!

I flew at 36 weeks for my sister's wedding but I had a fabulous pregnancy and no swelling and my doctor sent my records with me just in case anything happened and I had done a search for hospitals in the area just in case. You should be fine but if you don't want to go then don't, but don't blame it on the pregnancy.

Most European carriers won't let you fly after a certain point. I think it's around 7 months. I'd say that, and possibly blame your doctor too. There is no way at all that I would do that.
