Not rich and do not know Obama. Can I get my kid into an "elite" school?

Do you know--do you work for a school, or have you been so informed your school--or are you speculating? At our school, applications are up from the same time last year.

No you can't get your kid in
Schools are for the ruling class

I went to a school parent meeting and heard a report from the head of school.

unless there's just one sock puppet on here responding constantly ...

It seems like many of you are really new to town? to DC town and close-in. or maybe you're all in medicine or engineering, something having no contact or knowledge of official DC?

the elite and semi-elite politicos don't leave. They stay and lobby, take the helm of think tanks, the Kennedy Center, and so forth.

I'm not a DC native, and I AM in health care
Not a sock puppet tho
I truly believed, when people got elected they came in to town with their entourage, and when their terms were up, they went home to their extended families, high school buddies etc...
just goes to show how little you know when you only talk to others in health care, or in the gym
I've been living here maybe 20 yrs, and have only twice had dinner with a politician...

I see that some people have a wrong idea of families in the so called "elite schools". People there is regular either with old money, new money or just plain average money. If you want to go eat at Clyde's you go, or you can go to any other place you wish. Sometimes it is all about living a regular live, simple and full it is not all fancy and golden. You are mistaken DC for Hollywood.

I'd be curious to know, are you World Bank/IMF? English does not appear to be your first language.

Or this could be simply one of those anti-intellectuals who has chosen to live "a regular . . . simple and full life," shunning anything that smacks of elitism (like a private school education).

While it is easier to get into some schools if you have more money, it is possible to get in on other things like... having a smart kid!!

If you don't get in, maybe it's a sign that your kid isn't suited for a top private school environment!

That's a pretty low--not to mention inaccurate--debate tactic. Dozens of very smart kids are rejected every year.

Why the heck the World Bank/IMF question?

Because at least one member of the family has a really good salary. Not to mention a tuition subsidy depending on when the kids started at their school.

Agree, plenty of smart kids are rejected each year in favor of kids with connections/wealth.

I heard that the World Bank and IMF are discontinuing the tuition benefit. That should also have an impact on private school admissions.
Anonymous
From whom? The World Bank, btw, discontinued it a while ago for new hires.

And plenty of smart kids are rejected each year in favor of other smart kids with similar connections/wealth. It really isn't a conspiracy - it's just a numbers game.
