Furniture salesperson -- Redecorating Drama!

Because if you are a heterosexual woman you should be more offended at a homophobic remark about someone else than a sexist remark directed at you? WTF? That's some weird misery poker you're playing there.

My husband and I are in the process of buying new furniture for a new house -- quite a bit of furniture in fact. We went to one store this weekend and wound up purchasing a custom couch and a lamp. I went to the restroom during the payment process and when I came back I saw that the bill of sale was printed out as "Mrs. Husband's Last Name". Which doesn't happen to be my last name. I made a light-hearted joke about "Who is Mrs. X?" and the salesperson said "Your husband told me your name but I told him he shouldn't be having any of that -- you need to be Mrs. Husband's Last Name!"

Um, no. I restated my name, said that's how I want to be addressed, and left it at that.

I had to email the guy this morning to finish up our order (pick out a fabric) and signed it "My First Name My Last Name". He just emailed back addressing me three times as "Mrs. Husband's Last Name". Granted he put in an "LOL", so I assume he still thinks this shit is funny.

Question -- is this manager worthy? Just seems so obnoxious!

Did you by chance smile and laugh when making your request about your name? If so, he may have thought you were joking round?

Yes, I would cancel the order and go elsewhere. Not necessarily because of the name but because the guy's behavior is obnoxious and if there is a problem or issue with your order you will continue to have to deal with his obnoxious behavior and why deal with that stress?

if you cancel your order, you have to spend another weekend furniture shopping. Now who's won the fight? Suck it up and just complain about the guy to his boss; make sure he doesn't get a commission. Keep the furniture.

Don't cancel your order, but threaten to cancel it and get another 10-20% off your order when you complain to management.

Then post a nasty review on Yelp. That usually gets the store's attention.

OP here --

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm going to say something to his manager. Now I'm just not sure if I should wait for the furniture to be delivered (so it doesn't get "accidentally" screwed up) or do it now. There's no way I'm cancelling -- we searched forever for a couch!

I will also do Yelp -- this store has a history of responding to customer complaints on there, I saw that yesterday when researching.

Thanks all.

Same here. He works on commission.

I would also cancel my order. It's not the feminist issue - it's that he is working on commission but intentionally disregarded a simple customer request. How can you trust him to follow through on making sure your order is correct, and fix any problems, if he has this kind of attitude?
