Control your f-ing dog

I just hate it when they run up and scratch my legs with their filthy feet and nails. The owner always goes, AWWW. I really want to give it a solid KICK!

I don't mind dogs, but unfortunately most dog owners are selfish and entitled. They don't stop to think that other people's worlds don't revolve around their misbehaved pets.

Agreed!

This, with a dose of common sense. If it is a hundred pound lab, it's getting my knee to the chin. If its a yappy Maltese it is getting a flick of my toe.

The same can be said about people with kids.

OP, I'm sorry this happened to you.

At the same time, you generalize to all pet owners and all dogs, which I think is unfair and you know it's provocative.

Yes, but I don't let my toddler hug strangers with mud on her hands and then lick them and say "that should make you smile!"

If you hate dogs and their owners so much and might be allergic, wtf are you doing living in a pet friendly building?

I love dogs. But I am continually amazing by the lack of control people have over their dogs in public. No, my son does not want to pet your dog. If he does he will ask. Don't let you dog run over to my child. I have taught him to ask permission from the dog owner before approaching the dog. Shame many dogs owners don't extend the same courtesy.

How do you know the dog wasnt a puppy? Small dogs can be puppies too. What about a newly adopted pet? There will be moments where you are around dogs and it will actually have to be acceptable that they arent perfectly trained yet because there either hasnt been time in their life yet or they are newly adopted.
As a dog owner, I dont think she should have let the dog get that near you but the other posters on here seem to think all dogs should be trained - that is not reality.
When my mastiff was 8-9 months old he looked full grown to some people and even though he was trained, he was also adolescent and needed more training then. I think non dog owners should be more educated BEFORE they make rash judgements. And if they dont want to educate themselves on it, then deal.
And as a comparison, a 2 year old boy looked up my skirt yesterday and giggled. I gently told him it wasnt ok to do that and smiled at hi taking him back to his mom who was mortified. I didnt then judge her. He is 2. I would have felt differently if he were 8.

My kids are not going to run up to you and lick you.

I am a dog owner, OP, and generally fairly tolerant of canine antics, but I thought of this post as I was "attacked" by two small dogs as I ran today. They sprinted down the sidewalk to bark at/jump on/attempt to bite my shins as their owner lumbered down her walkway carrying a third unleashed dog. She picked up the pace a little bit when I called to her to please come get her dogs, and she was very apologetic when I said I don't appreciate their trying to nip me, but I still don't understand why some small dog owners feel that they do not need to train and leash their dogs! We worked very had to train my very large dog and keep him on leash in public settings. I just wish other dog owners could return that very small courtesy.

OP, your rage and hostility are over the top for what happened to you. For your own peace of mind, you should really move to a pet free building. If you hate dogs and people who have dogs, it makes no sense to live where you have to share close quarters (elevators) with them.

If you really want to stay in a pet friendly building, well, you will have to learn to live with dogs passing into your personal space. Some will be well behaved, some won't. Kind of like children, really.

Chill out.

My dog is trained to "go to her spot and sit" each time she gets into an elevator, which is the far left corner of it. unless she knew someone, she would not go over to them in the elevator. And she's got hair, not fur, so unless you're allergic to your own hair, you wont be allergic to her.

People are allergic to dog dander

Except that most people aren't allergic to dog hair or fur. They're allergic to dog saliva and dog dander, which often cling to dog hair and dog fur.

Dogs with hair are sometimes easier to deal with because they shed less, which means that their saliva isn't spread quite so far around, but it's still an issue.
